My 59 year old husband has been diagnosed with Prostrate Cancer. They have caught it very early due to a jump in his PSA from 2.8 a year ago to 4.5. They did 12 punches and only one showed any cancer and it was only 9%. We are trying to gather info to decide which course of treatment. 45 radiation treatments, the seeds or complete removal of the prostrate. Our Dr has assured us that since it is in the very early stages all 3 treatments would work. Basically we are trying to decide on which side effects would be the most doable for him. We would love to hear from people who have had each of these to get some honest opinions of their recovery and the side effects. Thank you to everyone and anyone that can shed some light on this for us.

" What was his Gleason? I had radiation, I don't recommend it, no matter what treatment you have they all have a downside to it. HIFU is the best choice considering all the side effects. If your Gleason is 6 or lower you could stop or reverse the cancer with diet and supplements and monitor your psa. I have witnessed many people , including myself.

" Hi Dan! His Gleason was 6. What is HIFU? Is that the hormone treatment? He talked to someone that did that and was told it made them really sick? Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my questions.

" Cathi,
HIFU is high intensity ultrasound, it has the least amount of side effects. It has been done around the World the last 5 years with excellant results. There are trials around the USA and your husband would be a candidate. Insurance won't pay for it because they say its expieramental. it cost $20,000 if you pay for it yourself, but you should be able to find it for free at a clinical trial.

" Hi,
My husband had HIFU, and it was so easy, I feel so lucky, he had no discomfort or side effects, it is the future...it's in clinical trials in the US.

We went to Mexico, last December, it was a 2 hour procedure, then he has to wait for the anethesia to wear off (put to sleep to make sure there is no movement), then he is back to normal...except he will have a supra pubic catheter in for 2 weeks, a small price to pay for being cured with so little risk of any problems. My best advice is to make sure your doc is very experienced, as it's a new treatment, and it's a highly skilled procedure.

Regarding insurance, because it isn't approved in the USA yet insurance companies cannot approve it, so do not call before treatment for approval, the answer will be no. but, if you submit your paper work afterwards you have a good chance of some reimbursement. I know that Aetna and blue cross/shield pay.

We paid $25,000. as my husband only had emergency medical, and it was worth every penny!!! "
