Gleason Result Question

Hi,

I am new to your group. My name is Bea and my husband was diagnosed yesterday with PC. He is 47 and I am 32. I am really upset with his old dr, because 4 years ago his PSA was 3.8 and he never mentioned that the PSA was a little high for his age. When he took it again a year ago it was 4.5. That dr said we should get it checked, but our ignorance of the situation resulted in us waiting almost 10 months to see the urologist. Part of that is because I was pregnant and had a son in April. He almost did not make it so our focus was there. i feel so horrible for not forcing him sooner. I finally remember last month and got him in, to find this out...

His gleason is 3+4 (7) of the 12 punches, 6 had a significant positive. 35%, 70%, 70%, 80%, 85% and 90%. They said it is all on his left side and none on his right.

PSA a year ago was 4.5 (not sure what it is now)

We go to meet with his dr tomorrow to discuss treatment options.

I am trying to learn as much as I can and now I know 4 years ago this should have been looked into. I am so mad at myself for my ignorance. I want to stay positive for my husband, but it is so hard. i do not know how severe this is yet, but the high % on one side really has me worried. When I asked his new dr if it was curable, he said yes, we caught it early. But, that does not look like it was caught early. i know that I do not understand any of this so maybe the high % does not imply it has spread.

I hope you will allow me to open your group. I could use support. I am going to recommend this site to my husband because while I am afraid I know it does not compare to what he is going through.

Thanks for reading.

" Welcome to the group that no one really wanted to be part of. I have advanced prostate cancer and there is no known cure. I was diagnosed almost 4 years ago. According to web MD there is no cure for advanced prostate cancer.I am doing well and getting healthier each day with my alternative treatment. With a Gleason score of 7, its considered aggressive, coupled with one side that has a high volume of cancer there is a chance that the cancer is not confined to the prostate and it may be advanced.I suggest you get multiple opinions and see an oncologist that specializes in the prostate. If the cancer is advanced surgery won't cure him. If it is advanced the only true way to beat it is with traditional treatment coupled with alternative treatment. Nine months after radiation my cancer reoccured. I was able to reverse my psa from 2.39 to 0.45 over 3 years with my holistic approach. The only reason I am telling you this is to give you hope, that your husband can beat it. When I was diagnosed my PSA was 23.5 and a Gleason score of 7. All 12 cores of the biopsy were positive, 2 up to 75%. If you would like more information you can visit my web site at wwww.alternativeprostatecancer.com
All the best

" Google Ketan K. Badani, MD. Watch his short video on robotic prostate surgery. I was operated on for prostate cancer on January 19, 2009 by him and his team at NY Presbyterian Hospital. He is 35 years old, has done about 1,000 of these robotic procedures and is an incredibly gifted surgeon. There are other Dr. Badani's out there, but what you are looking for is di Vinci robotic surgery (if your husband is suitable for it) and a surgeon who has done hundres of them. They can all just about cure the cancer, but the real skill is in nerve sparing. Will he be continent and potent after surgery? You need the best. don't be afraid to travel. NYP, for example, has a hotel right in the hospital. It is a one night stay. "

" Bea,
If the cancer is advanced, surgery will not cure him. Before you start looking at treatment methods you really need to stage the cancer proberly. you should get second and third opinions and do some research

" More than likely the next step will be a series of tests to determine if the cancer has spread or is confined to the prostate. That is what my husbands' doctor ordered. Once you know what you are dealing with, they go from there. Check out the American Cancer Society web page also. It has a section on "staging" "

" Rashaw,
I am not a doctor. I have been studying this disease for 4 years. This is the primary reason I am doing well. The doctors do not disclose full facts about the disease, treatments and the bad side effects of all treatment options. If it wasn't for my alternative treatment I would be dead or close to it. None of the doctors told me there is no cure for advanced prostate cancer. I found that out by researching it on Web md. If it makes you feel better my daughter is a doctor. If you like you visit my web site it will tell you more.

" We went to the appt and here is the details...

He is stage T1c the rest the 85% was a 50%. Of the 6 positive 4 were 3+4 and the other 2 were 3+3. The doc said he could not feel anything when he did the DRE and that it does not appear that it has left the prostate, but there are odds that it did and he gave those. He said if it did it was still within the fat layer. He wants to do Hormone, Radiation and Seeds. He is finally switching to my diet, so I am really happy about that. Also, he starting to get really nervous and all of this is starting to set in that it is real. The doctor said we have time to make a decision, so no need to rush and collect as much information as possible.

Thank you everyone for your replies. All the information has been very helpful.

Dan, Thank you for sharing. Your story is amazing. I am interested in your book and I will check it out. My family is very holistic in thought and we believe that a combination of western medicine and natural healing can help fight this. My husband thinks a lot of the holistic things are hocus pocus, but he is starting to listen. "

" Wow, sorry for how that was written. I am still a nervous wreck. To correct something, the doc said there is a good chance it has not left his prostate and if it did it is right outside in the fat layer, but that there is always a chance that it has spread. "

" Bea,
I am happy to hear they think the cancer is confined, and being a t1c instead of t2c which was my score, then he should be cured after treatment. However to increase his odds of a total recovery, with no reocurrence,a holistic approach would be beneficial. If you have any personal questions you could contact me at my web site. All the best and keep in touch
