Hello Everyone,
My husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer today. His PSA was 3.8 and his Gleason score is 6. The urologist said 1 out of 6 samples were cancerous? This is all new to me. My husband is 58 years old, and I just lost my mom to Parkinson's disease last July. I've joined this group to learn and cope with the disease. Posted on 02/03/09, 06:02 pm |

This sounds like a very curable case. however you should send the biopsy for a second opinion, the biopsy can be subjective. Move slowly and do your research. you should get second opinions on treatment methods.

Once again I agree with Dan. His PSA level was low so you have time to have the biopsy re-evaluated and time to decide on treatment. My husbands PSA level right before treatment had gone from a 5.5 to a 6.5. He had 8 weeks worth of direct beam radiation and came through it well with few side effects. Fatigue and some urination problems being the main 2 problems but both are getting better. He has his first PSA level check comign up soon. He had a very good oncologist/radiologist and treatment at very good centers. % weeks at one then the last 3 at a different one as the machinery there was supposedly better for the last few treatments. Good luck

Hi my husband also had only one sample being cancer to.but he had many samples over a 10 yr period and alot of them were pre cancerous. His psa was around 18 I dont know what his gleason was.He had six months of lupron shots and then had radiation seed inplanted in his prostate.that was 3 months ago .His only complaint is he is tired. He is 65 and teaches high school also driver ed.so hes pretty busy. His cancer is slow growing .Try not to worry although I know you will read up on all the treatments and good luck.

I'm wondering why they even did a biopsy with a PSA of 3.8 unless it had gone up suddenly. The big thing is this does not sound like an urgent or dangerous case and you should not rush into treatment.
Get a second opinion and also consider HIFU, which is mentioned a number of places in this board. It is a newer, not so invasive treatment not yet approved by the FDA, but available in Canada and lots of other countries. It has much less threat of side effects.

With the biopsy one of the samples was cancer with a Gleason score of 6. His PSA was around 2.0 last blood work up which was 6 months ago. The DRE exam revealed that his prostate was indeed enlarged, and my husband has had some difficulty urinating in the morning. We found out on Tuesday if the cancer is confined to the prostate, as he had an MRI and a CAT scan on Thursday. Thank you everyone for your support

The American Cancer society has all sorts of resources you can contact. They were very helpful to us during my hubbys treatment. His psa was 5.5 and during the 2 months it took to get all the various drs and centers lined up it jumped to 6.5. The previous fall it was like at 3.5 then jumped to 4.5 then to 5.5 all within a short time frame. The dr said it was slowly growing earlier on but finally started growing fatser but still well contained in the prostate and his treatment was without any major side effects. He didn't care for all the treatments but who would? HIFU would have been a nice option but our ins wouldn't pay, we would have had to go outside the country and we barely had the money to get him to treatment locally. Maybe someday we will catch up (FDS wise) with other civilized countries and their treatments. Ridiculous we cannot get the same, the machine used in HIFU was invented right here in the good old US of A in INDIANA. Go figure.

We meet with the urologist on Thursday to schedule surgery. My husband is calm but I am a nervous wreck. I'm just hoping that his recovery goes smoothly.
