Tricky question

My husband had a Prostatectomy in November. His first psa was a .3 and his second was a .6. He is has just started radiation and we have a question...... His treatment time is not until 4:15 in the afternoon, this time is set in stone until someone is done or dies. Their words, not mine! So, here is the problem, he has been told that he has to have a full bladder and an empty rectum. Today he went and his rectum was full and his bladder was not full enough. The bladder issue was easier to fix then the other. Does anyone out there have any ideas on how he can coordinate this while working??? They are suggesting a laxative 2 hours before...but then he is worried about his bladder emptying at the same time??? I mean, seriously I am not making this up....and not sure where else to go! Thanks in advance for your help!!

" Oh your post brings back recall to me. I am a vegetarian and hence a high fiber diet. I had no problems with an empty enough bowel but the radiation caught up with me and I had extreme pain requiring a bland low fiber diet and then had problems with regularity. I also lost considerable weight during the process so having a full or unacceptably full bowel was never a problem. I would suggest if it has not already happened that your husband will probably lose his appetite and hence less in his bowel. If not, I would suggest he changes when he eats and that in fact he take a laxative or foods or juices timed properly to help with a less full bowell, it doesn't have to be empty just not full, so there will be less damage to the bowell during radiation. Lastly, ask to speak to a dietician at the hospital. They are quite helpful. Good luck to your husband and I hope all is well during the radiation treatments. "

" My radiation only concerned the bladder being full. However seems like an easliy solved problem After the rectum deal, drink fluids the next two hours. I had to drink 34 oz and hold till after the treatment. Drank on the way and had no problem. Good holding.
