Hey everyone,
My dad has Prostate Cancer by the time he reached 45. He is 60 now, and he was lucky enough they caught it early, so they were able to remove it. Since I am his oldest son, and I'm approaching 40, well my brother and I are both worried that we might get it. Since I am 6 years older then my brother, if we do get it, it would probably be me first so what I am wondering, what is this Prostate thing all about? They got Prostate, Enlarged prostate, Prostate Cancer, what are the differences? but my main question; what are the signs to look for with some of these conditions? I don't normally go into the doctor very often, especially my family doctor, because I am usually involved with Crohns Disease issues, and my family doctor doesn't want to get involved in my health and well being in regards to crohns, so most health issues i have, he will not deal with, so needless to say, I don't see him very often, maybe once every 5 years or so for a routine Bood pressure checkup. So I was wondering if there were any signs to look for that something could be wrong? Not that I'm looking for anything to happen.. Its just, I had a Cathetor put in once, for about 5 hours while awake, and that 5 hours was awful! I told my dad I says "I do NOT want to go thru that again". He had one for many months with his Prostate, and tried to tell me it wasn't that bad, but I just downright hated it. like wearing boxers instead of briefs, just wasn't comfortable at all and it felt like u were going pee all the time, it was very uncomfortable, and I'm hoping i don't get any kind of Prostate problems so I don't have to have one of those again. thanks Posted on 10/14/07, 12:10 pm |

The single most important thing you can do, since you dad has prostate cancer, is call your primary doctor and schedule an appt for an exam and PSA test. PSA is a blood test, very simple.
Once a year, have your prostate checked. Enlarged prostate is something that happens to most men as they age. It can be treated with medication. It doesn't mean you will or won't develop cancer. It's always better to be safe than sorry. If there is no sign of a problem, wait a year and have another test and check up. My brother had symptoms for over a year before he was forced to go to the ER because he couldn't urinate. It was too late for him and even with Chemo and radiation and 3 surgeries, he didn't last very long. I lost him 2 years ago. Also, go to webMD.com and learn about prostate problems, and symptoms.

thank you kind lady :)
The main thing is I just don't want to overreact to the situation. I mean, I also have Crohns Disease, where prostate could look like things related to crohns. for instance, I do experience a burning sensation while urinating at times, other times I do not. Other times, I do have trouble urinating, and when i do, it comes out in a steady stream and cannot hold it back, but I have always been led to believe that these things are crohns related, so I was just wondering what men have experienced that led them to believe there was a problem, I guess :) This is the first time its ever happened to me, but yesterday, I woke up in the middle of the night, with the worst leg cramp. It was that muscle in the back of my leg below the knee. oh man, it hurt ALL day. It had felt like someone had taken that muscle and turned it into a knot. oh it was awful, and what was weird about it, I hadn't done any sort of exercise that would warrant anything like that. my wife was saying it could have been a lack of calcium in my diet, so I am in the process of making some yogurt right now, but man that was bad :(

I had prostate cancer at age 70 and was treated with radiation. The cancer was detected with a PSA test as my count went up to 7.0. That's when I had a biopsy that found early cancer stage. I had no symptoms, no pain or urinary problems before the biopsy.
Unless you have a cancer that is beyond early, you probably will not experience any symptoms. Since you are approaching age 40, you should have a yearly PSA test and also a digital test to check for lumps in the prostate. If your doctor doesn't want to cooperate, find another. The yearly tests are the most important along with staying away from saturated fat in your diet. Prostate cancer does not run in my family - it can happen to anyone. Take care of your self.

oh, I always thought that it did, thanks for the information :)
yeah, my dad was 45 when he found out, quite young. They also found his early, and got it taken care of, but he was telling me he had to wear a cathetor for about 7 months or so. I am not looking forward to that at all. I had a cathetor one time for my crohns, for about 3 hours while I was awake, and that was enough for me. it didn't hurt so much, as it was just uncomfortable in general.

Treatment has progressed a lot since your father had it. I understand, even if you have surgery, you will have to have a catheter, but not anything like 7 months. There are many other treatments, including an important new one done all over the world but not yet approved in the US (on 3rd stage trials) called High Intensity Focused Ultrasound which seems to be more effective on early stage PC, with less side effects.
Early PC is generally not symptomatic, and symptoms can be benign, but get the PSA test as a baseline, because the important thing is not absolute value, but a sudden change.

TCO - you mentioned you don't like the idea of catheters. External radiation which I had does not require a catheter. Internal radiation, called brachytherapy needs an overnight catheter. Surgery can require a catheter for maybe months.

Surgery does NOT require a catheter "for maybe months."
You only have the catheter for 10 or so days. Steve (see my blog: http://www.nubella.com/content/blo...)

HI,
My father passed away at the age of 55 from prostate cancer that went into his bones. I beg you to get checked early. A simple blood test could save your life. Don't look for signs, if you do that the cancer could be a whole lot farther. My dad went in when he had signs of not being able to urinate, pain in back and belly, down the legs. I forget his psa but it was off the charts. If caught early there are so many things they can do for you. My father in law found out after my dad did that he had prostate cancer. They implanted seeds in him and he's do GREAT! Prostate is a slow growing cancer. So please get checked early. My brother who's 36 got his psa checked at 34 because of my dad. There were men in the dr's office in early 30's who have it. So get checked now. Pray that you never get it. One poke can save your life.

You could prevent it with my holistic approach. I have advanced prostate cancer and after traditional treatment failed I was able to reverse it with holistic medicine. My approach has been working the last 2 and half years. The book is called Advanced Prostate Cancer and Me. My father and grandfather had prostate cance, my grandfather died from it.
