Any theories?

I've got another one for everybody...

Does anyone have any theories as to why we have these prolactin producing tumors? From what I've read, about 25% of the entire population has undiagnosed, benign brain tumors that aren't even found until an autopsy, and cause no problems. About 14 out of 100,000 people have pituitary tumors which produce prolactin (and are really annoying).

A few months after I was diagnosed, I found out a close friend was also diagnosed with a prolactinoma. We were roommates for about a year in college and for a short time after graduation. Just a funny coincidence?

Is it genetics, environment, "good" luck...?

" There have been loose ties to some of the insecticides we use.

There's not much public money for Prolactinoma research. Cabergoline was not FDA approved until 1997, so I think we are living in the dark ages this way.

I grew up in the Mississippi Delta.

We had insecticides all around us and plenty of dust - that was bathed in the stuff - that kicked up for us to breath.

When we were kids, we would rinse out the Black Flag sprayer...fill it with water...and spray each other for fun. "

" I was told stress or a simple thing as going off birth control can cause it to start to go in some people. And that they are not sure why it happens to some and not others. "

" Interesting! My endo told me to never go back on traditional birth control because it would make my prolactinoma grow. I always figured it had something to do with all of the hormones. In fact, I went off of meat/dairy for about 6 months to see if going off of the hormones made any difference. I couldn't tell. I still had to take my bromo to ovulate. :( "

" Since I have dealt with this strange bed-fellow since 1978 ( my first one) an invasive type... Now I have a more "Normal" well formed non-invasive tumor..
At times I think it is Genetic.. both of my parents have/had endo-related medical issues and I was born with what they considered a cerebral hemmorhage(sp?) .
Eight years ago, when they discovered the tumor had returned, they concluded I had been borne with a pituitary tumor, but in 1947 who knew about anything.. "
