Hi
Any of you tried St. Johns wort (hypericum) to handle an elevated prolactin level? I have read that it could lower prolactin and I hope that it will clear my head and make me feel more energetic. Any of you have experiences? Gitte Posted on 11/01/09, 11:11 am |

PLEASE, DONOT take any over-the-counter meds and most importantly ... stop the herbals..
Whatever you hear about herbals is harmful.. Take only meds under the authority of a licensed physican, not a loon with a herbal book. Herbs can cause more medical problems than you already have. Endocrine patients have enough medical issues to begin with.. don't encourage the on-set of even more problems.

I think we have different opinions on that matter. My doctor prescribed ordinary antidepressant, with lots of sideeffects. I don't think that herbal can be worse than that?
What are your experiences? Gitte

I agree with you both actually. I work in a health food store and see people having excellent benefits from some herbs, and see some people who don't know what they're doing and could hurt themselves. I think that whenever you use herbs, you should really consult a licensed naturopath, herbologist, or homeopath. It's not a good idea to self-medicate because these are powerful substances.
It kind of comes back to our health care system (big surprise) because most of us can't afford to go to a naturopath because most insurance companies won't pay for alternative medicine/therapy. I am going to visit a naturopath on monday to find out what are the natural alternatives to cabergoline/bromocriptine/surgery for this and I will be sure to share!! ( I'll ask her about the St. John's wart) Take Care! =)

Thanks!
I'm looking forward to hear from you again, after your visit to the naturopatah. Concerning nature herbs, I have tried Vitex Agnus Castus, which I was told could cure hyperprolactinaemia. I have tried it for half a year, but it didn't help me much:o( good luck gitte

I've been talking to my naturopath and she did a lot of research on the matter..And to conclude she advised against vitex, but we will try St. John's wort..I'll let you know how it goes. I definitely advise seeing a professional though when it comes to herbs..They can be very powerful!

There is also 5HTP, which is the precursor to Serotonin in the brain, that can be purchased OTC.
But, I agree with Venus...be very careful with herbals and supplements...some are very powerful and they stand to complicate things.

I am confused now because I went to see a Naturopath today and she said the exact opposite, KNewman. She advised AGAINST St. Johns' wort, and recommended Vitex.... What is that about you think? Im confused. : (

Hi there...Not sure about that one. My naturopath said vitex could possibly cause me to lactate...So I don't know? I do know one thing though that certain antidepressants can cause your prolactin to rise...My endo told me that one and it also happened while i was on them...
