Has anyone ever gone off Cabergoline?

My first endo made it seem like there was a good chance a prolactinoma 10mm or smaller will shrink after a year or so of treatment with Cabergoline. Has anyone experienced this? Just wondering if I'll ever be able to go off Cabergoline. My new endo hasn't made any comment about it yet...
I still have about 6 months before I hit the 1 year mark, but I like to think that someday I'll go off the medication completely. Then again, when I think back on the time it took me to get used to it in the first place, I'm hesitant to ever go off. And, does anyone know if there are withdrawal effects? I imagine a drug that affects neurotransmitters won't go out without a bang! Posted on 10/21/09, 07:10 pm |

When I asked my first Endocrinologist about how long I would have to take Cabergoline; he said, "Five Years".
I think he was telling me to get used to it.

Yes, last year I killed my tumor. (after 13 years) But, I am still putting out extra prolactine. So I take 1 pill twice a week for now and we plan to lower it again next year. Patience I feel really great these days. Oh, by the way your boob's really hurt that first month as you go down on the medication.

It's so funny you say that about the boobs! Mine are like ticking time bombs for the last two weeks of my cycle before my period. Can't be touched, hugged, bras are awful. My endo and I wrote it off to fibrocystic breast syndrome (something my mother had when she was my age)...she said it shouldn't have anything to do with the meds. I wasn't sure.
Sad about the meds...I would really eventually like to go off. Thanks for the help.

I don't take cabergoline but bromocriptine. I have terrible headaches, breast tenderness, pelvic pain. My doctor says that those are not side effect of my medicine but after reading some of these entries I wonder how much they really know. I am glad I found this support group because I thought I was going crazy.

No, you are not going crazy.
There are all kinds of side effects...particularly if you get a little too much medication.

I agree... I don't know how much these endos know. When I told her that I was having severe nausea with the cabergoline, she said she's only had one other patient who's complained on that. She said its rare... it doesn't seem like it to me though from what i've heard people say here! She also didn't think the depression and fatigue I have are related.. i told her i wasnt depressed til i started this medication... : /
