Low Estrogen

I have been treating my prolactinomma for almost 7 months with bromocriptine. My levels have been normal (high range 29, 30, etc.) for about 3 months now. AF did not return so I was prescribed Provera and it brought on AF. I still didn't ovulate. I then tried 50mg of Clomid and still no ovulation. I am not on 100mg of Clomid and hoping for the best.

My RE says my estrogen is still low and is surprised when I respond to the Provera even. He says it just takes time and that I don't have any other known complications - I ask about PCOS all the time.

How long did it take to get AF back once your levels were normal?

Anyone have normal prolactin and still low estogen without ovulation?

I am so frustrated...

" Hi...I think it just depends...I took Dostinex for 3 years and still didnt have a period. And then, I stopped taking it for 9 months (stupid of me, thinking I don't need it) any ways, I got back on it and just got it back...(almost 4 months after re starting Dostinex). Is your prolactin levels normal, or is it in the 29 or 30 range? My levels had to drop to like 4 before I got it back...I hope you get it soon....keep your head up, I know how frustrating it is.... "

" My period did not return until my prolactine was 25 and I was not able to get pregnant until it was under 20. My understanding is that 20 is the high end of normal.

I have normal prolactine and low progestrone. They can get your estogen up if they need to. "

" HI ChiefMT

I am not familiar with some of the acronyms you used (AF) and nor am I familiar with Clomid. I've been treating with Cabergoline and for the first 2-3 months of treatment my prolactin levels were normal but my periods were crazy!!!!

I had a period everyday for 3 months, with maybe one week of down time in between. During that 3rd month I had excessive bleeding. My doctor gave me some Progesterone to control the bleeding that occurred and I probably took 4-8 of these pills and stopped. After that, I've been having normal periods.... however none of my doctors like to check my estrogen.

Prolactin throws off your estrogen levels by lowering them and some literature say by affecting your progesterone levels. Our ovulations and periods are regulated in a tight dance between estrogen and progesterone, so when the ratio is off, your periods are going to be wacky. So I would agree with your doctor, wait and see if your estrogen levels eventually recover to normal levels.

Check your testosterone levels in addition to your progesterone levels to see if that might be off too. My testosterone was high whenever my prolactin levels were in the 100 range. When my prolactin would go to 50, my testosterone would resume to normal. My last blood workup had my prolactin at 3.8 (low normal) and my testosterone lower than low. "

" I see that they checked your estrogen levels. Did they ever check your progesterone levels? It can only be checked the second half of your cycle. I've been taking Cabergoline for a year and my cycle has been messed up (21 days-55 days). I've done four cycles with progesterone & evening primrose and I've gotten it right on day 29. This next one we are trying just the evening primrose.

Also have you had your thyroid checked? Mine was low normal so I take hormones for that as well trying to get everything balanced out. It's all related...

Good luck!!
Michelle "

" My thryoid is fine. The only thing that ever looks scued is my prolactin. I am on my second round of Clomid (100mg) and it isnt working. SO frustrating. Last week my prolactin was 18. I am wondering if I should switch to Dosinex. "
