Bromocriptine Side Effects

So, I've been back to my endocrinologist. I was there last week. It was a much better experience than the first time I went. I have gottne the impression from her that she is saying that its okay to try and get pregnant.
She started me on Bromocriptine. I had a hard time the first 4 days I was on it, now those symtoms seem to have subsided. I have nauseated stomach, no more vomiting, no more dizziness. But I've started to have some headaches, which I read is a side effect, also right now, my right ankle and the lower part of my leg is quite swollen. I work in a doctors office and we have a nurse practioner there who took a look at it for me. She wanted to make sure there were no signs of blood clot or cardiac trouble, which there were not. She looked up the Bromocriptine in her med book and it lists edema of the ankle and legs as a side effect. I was just wondering if anyone has had this happen and what you did for it. I don't really know what to do for it. I called my endcrinologist's office and she will not be in until Tuesday. I really want to have a baby, so I am determined to stay on this medication to see if it can shrink my macroadenoma. I was told that its really nothing to be too concerned about, its up to me whether I want to live with a fat ankle or not. Anyone experience this side effect> Posted on 06/19/09, 11:06 pm |

For about the first 4 days I was on the medication, I felt horrible. I was very, very sick to my stomach, extremely dizzy, and I had some vomiting. I have been on it for about a week now, and most of the symptoms have gone away. I also had some headaches, which I have not been prone to, but those seem to have gone away too.
But let me tell you, those first 4 days were horrible. It was a little scary at times, because of the dizziness. I had been on this back in 2005 and I had to stop it because I couldn't handle the side effects. What is wierd is that this time, I am on a higher dose, I am on 5 mg last time it was 2.5 mg and this time I am handling it better. My doctor had told me to take it before I go to bed, but that wasn't working for me as I was still feeling the effects in the morning, so I had to take it early in the evening. This I was determined to make this work, this ankle thing, I will deal with it. I work at a doctor's office and I had a nurse practitioner look at it, she looked up the med and edema of the legs and ankles is a noted side effect. She had me call my endo doctor but I won't be hearing back from her until Tuesday. She did tell me though the doctor probably won't have a problem with me going on with the medication, this side effect is more of a nuisance than anything, if I can live a fat ankle, I'll be fine!! Which I am more than willing to do, shrinking this thing is the only way I will be able to have a baby, which is what I really want. My prolactin levels are only slightly elevated at 46, so she says on this med, I should probably be able to get pregnant easily, its just the size of the tumour and it pushing into my optic nerve. This is why I am on the med, to try and make it smaller so that this won't happen!

Oh my gosh, I had no idea that this was a side effect. My mom mentioned this weekend that my feet and ankles look swollen. Crap! I go to the endo tomorrow so I will mention it to him as well and ask if they are related! Thanks for posting!!!

Karrah I would be very interested in knowing what your endo has to say about the ankle swelling.
I won't be even hearing from mine until at least Tuesday. Like I said I was very unaware of this side effect as well. It wasn't until the nurse practioner where I work looked up the medication in her book that she found that side effect. Possibly it could be rare and that is why no one has really heard of that. My ankle seems to be okay today. So hopefully this phase has passed. The one other thing that happened to me was I had an iced cap the other day. I read on the print out that the pharmacist gave me that you are not supposed to drink coffee with Bromo, well I wasn't really thinking when I had the iced cap, I will not be doing that again. I felt horrible!!! It was like the side effects started all over.

I am back from the endo and happy to say my levels have gone from 121 to 5.9 in only 9 weeks!!! He said i should be getting a visit from AF anytime according to my hormone levels!! woo hooo... he didnt seem concerned with my feet swelling, they weren't even really swollen today. So hopefully your endo will have more insight there.

Thats very good to hear!!
My ankle has gone done as well, so hopefully it stays that way!!! My prolactin level was at 46 when I started the Bromo, so we'll see what happens when I go back, I need this thing to shrink so it would be okay to get pregnant.
