Hey ive just recently got a diagnosis of having prolactinoma, i am about to take my first Cabergoline Tablet in the morning and im really worried about taking it as ive seen the list of effects.
Im a 24 yr old male and for the last 4-5 years i havent been myself in that time i have became reclusive and have developed a lot of OCD related problems due to my health deteriorating ( Bier spots, Hairloss, Weight Gain, Gynocomastia, Stretch MArks...) i have developed Body Dismorphic Disorder due to this and in the past if i didnt feel at least 90% or something was sitting right i wouldnt leave the house. Although i have managed to overcome that and can now go out even if i look like crap, i still do all the mirror checking and anxiety, so i decided to give another Doctor a go as i was gaining even more wieght and starting to feel worse than usual. They did some blood tests and a MRI and told me i have a 1cm by 1.5cm growth and that they were going to start me on cabergoline one a week. I have a few questions if anyone would be able to help me please. 1) Can a prolactinoma cause any of my symptoms or could they be unrelated ? Bier Spots, Hairloss, Weight Gain, Gynocomastia, Weakness. 2) If so if treatment was succesful would things like Hairloss reverse ? also i heard the treatment itself can cause hairloss ? 3) i work as a postman and do lots of fast paced walking with heavy wieghts up and down High flats/Rises with stairs, will i be able to perform at work safely while taking this medication ? as i was starting to suffer a bit with my weight and asthma aswell ? thanks for any help you guys can give, i havent really been told muc hand my GP im dealing with isnt really aware of it much. thanks Kevin Posted on 10/04/09, 04:10 pm |

Kevin,
These are really questions you should be asking your doctor. Have you been referred to an endocrinologist? You really should be under a specialists care for a tumor of your size (macro adenoma). Here's a website that provides info on pituitary tumors http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus... A doctor would be better able to discuss which symptoms are related to the prolactinoma. If your on any anti-depressants/psych drugs that can also affect your weight. It's difficult for me to give advice since I'm a woman, but sounds to me that continuing the exercising is a great idea. If nothing else it'll help with weight control and hopefully the endorphins will help elevate your mood. Good luck to you.

Kevin, yes...hairloss can be part of it...also plastic looking skin and oily skin, too. You have a lot of changes in your body with this. Gynecomastia...yes...depression, very definitely.
There are ways to manage some of this. You have a very large tumor and I would be curious as to how you discovered yours.

Dematitis and Psoriasis have a direct link to Clinical Depression. Didn't have Psoriasis until about 6 years ago before my diagnosis. I diagnosed myself.

Unbelievable i have been self diagnosing for years and gettign all sorts of tests and treatments costing $$$$ and got nowhere it al lstarted with these white spots all over my skin when im cold or nervous and i could never get an answer, so over time i gave up and locked myself away and as a last gasp try i decided to have one more go with a new doctor (last doctor visit was nearly a year and a half) not expecting anythign i was shocked when i got told that there was a reason for all my symptoms.
My prolactin level was 4908 mu/l and i also have low testosterone 5.4 nmol/l the reason i asked is if im losing hair with low testosterone how much will i lose once my testosterone levels are normalized ? the plastic skin thing is true people always telling me how great my skin is because i have no facial hair and look 16 even though im 24. i guess ive had this since high school as ive never had any face or body hair (except pubic and just recently underarm) and ive never had a sexdrive and this probs explains it. i just thought i was A sexual

You will learn a lot of mental discipline through all this. " this worries me as it alread yruns in my family my mum and uncle should ibe worried about starting it tommorow ?

I didn't mean to scare you.
This disease effects people in a wide variety of ways. I think, when you start taking Cabergoline, you will start to feel better. Your tumor is large and is very productive. It may be of the "soft" variety of tumor and may respond very quickly and favorably...in like 6 months...to the drug. You will notice big changes in the way you feel. They were positive, at first, for me...yet...it seems as though the improvement has a life of it's own...and you are left with a variety of other problems. That's been my case...that's not to say that will be yours. Stay tuned and keep us informed....but...take the medication and keep getting your MRI's and testing.

Welcome,
You need to start writing things down and preparing for your appointment with the Endo. Make a list of all your symptoms even if you do not think it is related and any Question you have. On the dostinex you can try it at different time of the day find out what works best for you. I take mine JUST before I go to sleep. If today's dose was too much for you can take 1/2 a pill for a couple of weeks and build to a whole. That is how I started. Now, the good news is the Endo should start you on testosterone and it sound like you are in for a pleasant surprise. Another great resource is www. pituitary.org Good luck.
