Advice:
Having bad side effects from Bromociptine

So I took the new meds Bromociptine last night for the first time. This morning I woke up with the worse headache and a very neausious feeling. I have been feeling sleepy, lazy, and sick to my stomach ever since. This medicine apparently is the only medicine hey perscribe to treate Prolactinoma. From what I am reading on the web, it's the same medication used to treat patients with Parcenson's desease. I am also suppose to start Metaphormine in a month. The Dr. wanted me to give my body a month to get use to Bromocriptine before starting Metaphormine. So far I am feeling terrible and hoping that I will feel better at some point. Not sure how long tis feeling will last. Is this something I am eventually going to get use to?

" It's day two of the medication and I am thinking of quiting. I can't take it anymore. I am feeling horrible and I think it's pretty dangerous to be feeling so numb and lightheaded and drive to work. I don't feel like I can function at all. What would you do if you were me? "

" Bromocriptine is not the only medication for prolactinomas. There's also Dostinex, generic name Cabergoline. That's what I take. I've never taken Bromocriptine, but I've heard it has some very strong side effects. The Dostinex is apparently much milder. The only side effects I've had on Dostinex are dizziness at night and some grogginess the next day. Ask your doctor if you can switch to Dostinex. It sounds like you need it. Good luck! "

" Hi, I'm sorry you are feeling bad. I took Parlodel/bromocryptine for many years for a prolactinoma and yes it gave me terrible side effects, however, after about 4 days my body would kind of adjust and the side effects wouldn't be so bad. But then along came Dostinex/cabergoline as someone else said and the side effects aren't anywhere near as bad. I take it only at night and you only have to take it a couple of times a week instead of everyday and it's just a little sleepiness at night and a little grogginess in the morning but it wears off by noon and no nausea or anything else. You should ask your doctor about it. Good Luck! "

" Yes, definitely ask your specialist to prescribe Dostinex/Cabergoline! Bromocriptine is a very old drug and is renowned for very unpleasant side-effects.

I've taken Cabergoline for over 10 years (1/2 a small tablet on one day and a full tablet on another day of the week). - a miraculous drug with few side effects.

I have not heard of this other medication you mention -- "Metaphormine". Is your endocrinoligist well-experienced and well-known? I would ask lots of questions and tell him you cannot tolerate Bromocriptine! God bless you Bahareh.. "

" I have been on bromo for 4 months, I take 2.5mgs a day , usually with supper. I can totally relate to how you are feeling. I am only now starting to feel not so nauseous and the headaches are becoming less painful. In the beginning I also had severe problems with heartburn so ranitidine was prescribed. I also experienced what I call "rushes" where it felt like everything was going a 100 miles an hour in my body and brain. I was told it's the chemicals in the brain trying to adjust. It will take up too 6 months for the bromo to level out and for you to feel not so terrible. I have found thru advice on here, that a good nights rest is needed not to feel so yucky. I have my good days and I have bad days. I just think of it as the medication must be doing it's job. If I were you I would try to get your Dr to put you on a medical leave until you are more adjusted to the bromo. You are light headed as the bromo does bring down your blood pressure. I do believe that you aren't suppossed to be driving on this med either as part of the list of warnings given with the prescription. Also you mentioned metaphormine? Is that not for diabetics?
On the good side of this med I have started to lose some of the weight that I put on at the start of all this...18 lbs to be exact. It will get better, and you will start to feel more human again but like all medications, it won't happen overnight and will take time. Another little insight...No alcohol with the bromo as it does make you violently ill! I have found even alcohol based mouthwashes make me gag! But be strong there is light at the end of the proverbial tunnel! "

" Sorry you are feeling so bad...

I am currently taking 2.5 bromo/day. I started on 1/2 pill/day and worked my way up. I always start a new dosage on a Friday night so that Saturday and Sunday I can just take it easy and not worry about the side effects effecting my work week. After the first dose, I usually feel nauseous, cloudy and have a headache. By the end of the week, the side effects will subside. I do feel more tired now that I used to though. Make sure you eat something right before taking it. When I take my 1 pill in the mornings I usually have a bowl of oatmeal which leaves me feeling great for the rest of the day. If I eat cereal or some fruit I usually feel the side effects more. It definitely helps to have a full stomach. Also make sure you get a good nights rest as that has an effect also. I would give myself at least a week on the meds before switching off. Remember the medicine is having good effects as well.

Are you taking the Metaphormine because you have PCOS or are you diabetic? "
