Hi Everyone,
8 years ago I messed up my knees and after surgeries and treatments I am here today with a habit of taking between 10 and 16 Norcos a day. I hate being a slave to them...Cost me clear thinking on so many life changing decisions! I decided to quit, and do it cold turkey. Why cold turkey? Because I tried tapering off, giving pills to someone to dispense htem to me, talked to my docs who weren't sympathetic at all, much less helpful. Planning on going to NA tonight. Can you please please share your experiences, share what got you through it, what gave you the strength? I would so appreciate it! Posted on 07/21/09, 02:07 pm |

I tried hundreds of times to quit cold turkey and I just couldn't do it. Very few people can quit without help.
I went through detox where I had daily medical supervision by a doctor who was also a recovering drug addict. I had great counseling while in detox and from there went through 3 weeks of an IOP (Intensive Outpatient Treatment) Program. From there I had three months of relapse prevention group counseling. If you can quit cold turkey, my hats off to you! But of the hundreds of former addicts I know, Only 3 were able to quit and stay clean for a long period of time. I am not trying to discourage you. I just want you to know your chances of quitting without help. NA should help you a great deal and it may be exactly what you need to stay clean. AA helped me because I had a dual addiction. Meet people, get a sponser or two and call one whenever you get a craving or are exposed to triggers in your life. It does help ALOT! I wish you luck on your journey. Please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing. God Bless and TC

I quit 4 days ago and went through the worst of it cold turkey. I took suboxone yesterday but had already gone through the worst of the withdrawals. I don't want to be negative but to put it mildly it was hell. I am thankful for that hell though because it wasn't easy I NEVER want to use again because I NEVER want to go through that again. Day 2 was awful and I did it on my own with the love and support of having my family both on the phone and my fiancee in person. If I have cravings I just think about how bad the withdrawals were and my cravings go away and think that drug did that to me. So I am proud of you if you can do it cold turkey. At least for me it only made me stronger. Good luck to you and be strong. You can do this.

Oh Lovely April,
I just have to say, "GO GIRL!" With me, its been going well enough during day one. In the evening I broke down and took one to be able to sleep...Day two, today, I am physically and emotionally a wreck...Went to NA women's meeting and that was good; then another that was not very accepting of newcomers it seemed.. I would love to be able to do detox at the hospital, but wonder if its possible without insurance..... At the moment, I am counting minutes and hours of the day and trying not to give in...But it is not always working, as you can see above. Thank you so much for sharing! I am also trying to deal with the pain--today its like a toothache in the knees and not much is helping it, but neither were Norcos effective on that anymore... Thank you...

Fair warning, quitting cold turkey is hell, but I have faith in you and wish you luck!
I didn't quit by choice, I got deep in to addiction of prescription pills and street drugs, anything I could use, but I'm also have issues with self injury. My therapist threatened to call the cops on me if I didn't go voluntarily to a psychiatric ward, so I had to quit in there.. Proud to say I've been clean/haven't cut myself in six months xD Best of luck to you!

I made it to day 6, and it was nothing less than living hell: I decided to opt for my quality of life being freed from severe, non stop pain so I can enjoy this time of retirement for myself. I plan to pursue other avenues of pain control, and I feel very good about having an understanding primary dr. who is behind me if the pain management approach doesn't pan out. But I agree with you, I NEVER want to go through the withdrawl again. It keeps me here at this support group, it is great to be around other people with the same daily struggle. I wish you all the luck in the world!!

I would ask your doctor about suboxone. It is less addictive than methadone and you feel no withdrawl symptoms. It helps trick your mind in thinking your receptors are full of opiates even though they aren't so you'll have no cravings. I'm on my 4th day of being clean and now I can finally sleep and I no longer have restless leg syndrom or night sweats. It can be a helpful medicine. As long as you don't abuse it like any other drug you've taken.
