I need advice on how to get off these dam narcotic pain pills on my own. I've tried seeking help but no one is willing to until after I deliver my baby. I'm wanting to ween down and do therapy one on one. I've tried 12 step programs three times now abs it's just not for me. I've been addicted for seven years now and I'm ready to be done for good as I no longer have the back pain that caused the addiction. I need advice not to be bashed even though I probably deserve it. I know that I'm depressed so I'm seeking treatment for that as well.any words of wisdom, advice and encouragement would be appreciated. TIA and sorry for the spelling mistakes I'm on my phone.

You need to talk to your dr about it so he/she can give you a referal to the substance abuse center at your local hospital so that u can be detoxed under the supervision of a doctor.
Please do not do this alone. You could get seizures from quitting cold turkey. For the sake of the little angel growing inside of you, please call your dr and make that appt asap! We will keep you both in our thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted! God Bless and TC!

You don't deserve bashing for having a legitimate medical condition. The best thing to do is to reach out and get help.
I hate to say it, but the ob or the medical professional who is treating you is out of step with current practices of medical management of pregnant opioid addicts. The current consensus at the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is to treat you now, not to wait until delivery. Ignorance with addiction is all around us. People mistakenly use shame and scorn to get an addict to stop. You are going to have to fight through that and get help for you and your baby. Here is a link to the American Society of Addiction Medicine where you can look up a doctor in your area who may be more able to treat your condition. http://community.asam.org/search/de... No bashing. I have worked with a lot of pregnant moms on opiates and who are currently on methadone maintenance doses throughout . their pregnancy
My first source would be to talk to your treating OBGYN. Because of the circumstances of the your pregnancy, you are considered very high risk, and you should be with an OB who takes high risk patients such as this and is familar with high risk obstetrics. In todays day in age, it is not uncommon for a mother to need to detox off a substance, weather it be medically prescribed, like seizure meds, xanax or anti depressants or pain meds. She also needs to know how to treat your baby and the effects it will have on your fetus as well as the baby once it is born. Secondly, once you find someone who can handle a high risk pregnancy, I would highly reccomending talking with your local mental health and substance abuse centers. Your doctor should be able to help you do that. They are probably not willing to perhaps let you detox outpatient, and as it is a liability, but a 3-5 day inpatient, with therapy.. might be a better option. If they are going to do an outpatient option, I'd want to know what the effects of doing a matienence program like suboxone are going to have on the baby. 211 . org is a great resource for just about anything .If you arent able to find what you need , you are always welcome to message me, and I'd be happy to try and locate something close to you.. as I work in social work and am familar with how to navigate finding a lot of these programs.

Thanks! I always Subutex was a brand name for Suboxone.. I feel dumb!
Frankly I feel like its all kind of scary when your are pregnant.. but having to go cold turkey is much more scary. Do you know the risks of taking something like Narcan or an opiate blocker?

Narcan was rated as category B which is considered generally safe, but narcan was meant for a one time usage not daily usage. Suboxone is rated category C.
I'm not sure of the exact reason they don't use it but im guessing its either possibility of inducing a harmful withdrawl reaction in the fetus or its GnRH suppressing effects in animal studies would have prescribers spooked.

So glad you made that call!
I just saw something on tv about this last night. Methadone can be used in pregnant women with little or no risk to the baby so it is the prefered treatment for drug maintanance in pregnant women and for preventing women for going back to opiod use. Every hour in the USA, a baby is born to a drug addicted mom having to suffer from withdrawals so early in life! So sad. Good Luck!

I'm not sure what type of pain meds you are taking, but I wanted to share my story. When I was pregnant with my first child, I developed terrible migraines. My OB sent me to see a neurologist who informed me that the safest meds they could prescribe me for an actual migraine was lortab and stadol nose spray. All the triptans and anti seizure meds normally used had way too many proven side effects. So I followed their advice and took these throughout my pregnancy. I actually ended up on bedrest and preterm labor due to developing high blood pressure. My baby although being tiny and a month early had no other problems. I however didn't realize that my body had become used to the narcotics, and I tried to quit cold turkey which didn't work so well for me. I went through a bunch of crap trying to figure out how to sustain my pills, and even though I've been off them for over a year I'm still dealing with the repercussions. I believe it is a true medical condition, and just being honest with your doc is your best bet. I finally talked with my Dr. and instead of just cutting me off she stepped me down (which required the help of my husband keeping the pills for me). I'm pretty sure she already knew about some of it because honestly your not fooling anyone. However, if you have legitimate back pain depending on what meds you are on and how much you are taking they may have little effect on your baby. I'm not a Dr. and I know I was on a very low dose, so if you feel your on too much then you really need to speak with your Dr. I hope everything turns out well for you!
