So my husband and I are trying for another baby post miscarriage in March. Our first child was born prematurely by c-section at 35 or 36 weeks after premature rupture of membranes and after a very long, rough labor (she was sunny side up and the epidural didn't work the 5 times they tried). She was unable to breath on her own and had to spend some time in the NICU. She is now thriving. No problems whatsoever. I'm wondering if anyone knows what the chances are of having another premature baby? Am I going to be considered high risk if I do have a viable pregnancy given that she was born "almost full term" and most babies can breath on their own by 36 weeks? Also, they never bothered to check to see if her lungs were mature which I assume they will do with #2. Thanks.

My son was born at 36 weeks as well because of premature rupture of the membranes as well, Luckily he didn't have to spend any extra time in the nicu or anything. But I was also wondering if I have a higher chance of premature ruptures again. All the research I've done hasn't really said anything, and I also did ask on this board again but havn't got an answer. I'd say to speak with your doctor about it and see what they say.
Good luck! :)

Hello
Well I cant speak for everyone but in June 30th 05 I had a baby he was born via c section due to leaking fluid and he was born at 25wks and he lived only 90mins I decided then and there that i wanted to start trying right away because I was already 33 and didnt want to wait any longer so we got preggo right away it seemed and I had my last son on June 29th 2006. Yes a day to the last one being born and passing away. He was born via c section also at 33wks my water broke. His lungs werent fully developed so when he was born he was in the nicu for week and he was great and he is now 3 and doing wonderfulg never would know he was ever a preemie. Anyways I had to two babies back to back And they were both early so I wish you the best and with my second I made sure i saw a fetal specialist once a month to montior everything so that my pregnancy lasted and I got sonos twice amomth to make sure that I would go into premature labor. That was def a relief so make sure u check into things with the next one beacause it was def peace of my mind!

I can really relate to your fears. My son was born at just 26wks and spent 3months in the NICU. We were extremely lucky . . . his lungs were fully developed, he needed no surgery his entire stay, and has now grown into a healthy 11mo. old. However, the whole experience was very hard emotionally. I have had a lot of questions and fears when it comes to possible having another baby in the future( I am so afraid of it happening again). On that note, every doctor I have spoken with, says that just because you first baby was early does not mean any other children will be. I have also talked with so many mothers in the same situation that have had perfect full term pregnancy's with their other children. The best you can do is make sure you are healthy and dont worry too much, stress is very unhealthy and can definatly play a factor in having a healthy pregnancy. Best wishes.

Thanks, ladies. I am indeed pregnant (7 weeks) and my doctor says she'll put me on progesterone starting at 16 weeks to prevent preterm labor and that she will monitor lung growth of the baby closer to term, but she also said it is highly unlikely that I'll make it to 40 weeks. We are shooting for 37 weeks.

I have 2 children and with my last daughter being born so preemie (at 25 weeks) and the long and stressful stay at the NICU I am gun shy about having another baby.. I would love to have one more but Lord knows I am petrified.. My Gyno said that if I did become pregnant again that I would be considered high risk and monitored more closely.. My fIance is gunning for me to go ahead and take a chance but I don't know.. sigh...
