Cramps at night

I know it is not uncommon and I have read that it can be due to a lack of calcium - I have a dairy intolerance but get calcium in other ways and have now started taking a suppliment too. Just wondering though any other ways to alleviate leg cramps at night. I had so many bad ones two nights ago that for two days my calf muscle has been aching and walking has been uncomfortable. It's loosening off now. Any advice?
Thanks!

" This could also be do to lack of hydration. You may want to try to drink more water earlier in the day to ensure that you are adequately hydrated and that you're not drinking so close to bedtime that you are getting up all night to go to the bathroom.
When you do get cramps, I find that flexing your foot helps alleviate the pain and makes the cramp go away.
Good luck. "

" Hi, I had this with my first pregnancy and the pain was really really bad,I got told to drink tonic water and a few different things but nothing worked. When the pain started I had to put my legs on a very cold surface and that seemed to help so before bed every night i would fill up hot water bottles with cold water and just as the cramp started i would put the bottles under my calfs and it really helped. good luck! x "

" Actually you might be wasting your time with the bananas. My dr told me you take those when your cramps are due to lack of potassium. When you are pregnant your cramps are usually due to lack of calcium.

His advice was to drink a glass of tonic water and have 2 tums every night. It worked like a charm! "

" I always try to increase my potassium too. Potatoes are another good source. I think water is always good for helping our bodies function correctly and maybe try doing some light stretching during the day and in the evening to help.
I have been getting them the last few nights and though I know calcium can be the problem, I know it is not for me and potassium is more than likely the culprit. (Idrink lots of water already)
Good luck... I know it feels horrible and totally disrupts sleep! "

" I too have been having leg cramps at night. I read somewhere to avoid soda's and also try to do leg stretches before going to bed. I can't say either has helped 100% but I only get them a couple nights a week. "
