Hello friends, As many of you know I've been dealing with nausea and vomiting for weeks now. Im currently 15 weeks and my doctor prescribed Promethazine (generic for Phenegrin). Several issues with it so far: #1 Im having trouble keeping it down #2 it makes me extreamly drowsy. I was wondering if anyone else was on this drug during pregnancy. Did you take it only at night due to the drowsyness? (I drive from home to home all day for work and dont think it would be safe to do on the meds) How long were you on the meds-how far into your pregnancy? Any other advice/personal stories would be greatly appreciated. Im so sick of being sick :( Thanks ladies...

" I took phenegran. At first I was given Reglan, but it did nothing for me. The phenegran was no miracle cure, but it took the edge off when I was at my worse. I did take it at night as I am a teacher and could not be falling asleep at my desk. I found by taking it at night it helped me to sleep better and get a better start to my day as I was not sick first thing in the morning anymore. By afternoon I would be sick again. I took it throughout my first trimester and was able to stop it by about 18 weeks. I am now 23 weeks and still sick time to time but I find it is not as bad as it was in the beginning, so I am just pushing through it. I know how you feel. I am at the point where ginger ale is making me sick to look at it because I have drank so much! I have only gained 9 lbs so far and my doc said I should have gained at least 15 lbs, but the baby looks healthy is growing fine. I am trying to eat as healthy as I can so what stays down is good for the baby. BTW, my doc did offer something called Zofran, but she said the side effects can be worse then phenegran for some (constipation, head aches etc.) So I stuck with the phengeran. But Zofran is something you can ask your doc about. Hope this helps! "

" I took it with my first 3 pregnancies...but my OB also took me out of work or I could only take it at nite ~ which meant vomiting all day long!!! It is available in a suppository if you aren't able to keep it down. That is how I took it, but it still made me very sleepy...I even split the suppository in half (12.5mg) & I would sleep for 6-8 hours at a timr. The other option that won't make you as sleepy is Zofran. It is available in a sub-lingual form (melts under your tongue) & typically doesn't cause the drowsiness. "

" rmae990 ~ I give Zofran almost every day at work & in practice find far less symptoms with Zofran then with Phenergan. But, it is interesting to hear that. I see more MDs prescribing Zofran then any other med for nausea.

Reglan works differently then the others as it speeds up the GI tract but is often less effective for some. But, for some pregnant women who have a slowed digestive process (esp those on high levels of progesterone) it can actually help you digest more of your food faster. Interesting. "

" I also took Promethazine, but mine was a suppository. I didn't take it long, as it didn't really do anything for my nausea and it made me pretty sleepy. My doctor then prescribed Zofran, and it really helped me a lot. My only issue with Zofran is it REALLY adds to the constipation. My doctor said she's actually seen women become impacted from severe constipation, so she lowered me to only once a day instead of three times a day. I started taking it at 7 weeks, I'm currently 19 weeks and still feeling nauseous since I'm only taking it once a day. I'd like to have a word with those people who write the pregnancy books that say morning sickness goes away by the 2nd trimester!! HAH!!! "

" I was prescribed that after a trip to the ER. It didn't work for me & I was back there the next day. From that point they admitted me. I know they were giving me phenegrin, reglan (both through IV),mylanta, tylenol & ambien while I was in the hospital. When I got out they gave me the pill form of those medications but I never had to take them. I was suprisingly fine. I have my random days where I throw up but I don't have to use any meds. I just eat something small every couple of hours. Hope you start feeling better soon! "

" I took zofran during the day and phenergan at night before bed. I hope you feel better soon, the constant nausea is no fun! "
