Fioricet for migraines

I came down with a major migraine yesterday afternoon and I still have it today. Tylenol was not touching it, so I called my doctor and she called in Fioricet. She said it is fine and will not harm the baby, but when I did some research it is graded as “C.” Has anyone taken Fioricet for migraines while pregnant? What are your thoughts??? I just need some relief!

I was perscribed midrin for migraines just a couple of weeks ago. Like you my OB said it would be okay to take while pregnant. However when I looked it up online it was class C and said only to use when clearly needed.... which sounded kind of dire to me. However I did take it when first perscribed because my head was killing me and I thought that I would go insane otherwise. I have decided to only take it if the migrane is really bad and I have to function. I think as long as you use it sparingly you and baby will be fine. {{Hugs}} Hope you get relief soon!

Oh how I can sympathize! I was having them 2-3 times a week for a day+ each. They are absolutely horrific to have when pg.
I don't know about the Fiorcet, though I suspect that if your doctor thinks it's okay, then it probably is. My Ob started me on verapamil, which is a calcium channel blocker (more typically used to lower blood pressure) and I haven't had a migraine since. It is probably considered to be a cat. C drug, but it works and overall, I am taking far less medication because I only need this once a day. Trust your doctor. It's okay to question, but I wouldn't be too concerned. Hope you find something that works ASAP. Christina (17 weeks tomorrow!)

I take Labetalol every day for my blood pressure & migraines. I used to take inderal but it wasn't safe during pregnancy. The labetalol is effective in working on both. I have not had a real full blown migraine with this pregnancy....with my others I was having them constantly. Labetalol is commonly used in pregnancy to treat pre-eclampsia. It is safe & could be something to consider. Good luck with the migraines! I know they suck!

Thanks for everyone's input. After doing further research and talking with DH, we decided that I should not take them becasue of the barbiturate in the ingredients. I only took one yesterday and it helped so much, but we figured out that Phenergan and Tylenol had the same effect, so I did that before bed last night and slept like a baby! I hope everyone is doing great.

Glad you found some relief. If memory serves from when I was on it 10 years ago, isn't fioricet a barbiturate, caffeine, and Tylenol in one pill? If so (and you can't take the combo of phenergan and Tylenol and sleep), try Tylenol and caffeine (from coke or coffee). At least you would get two of the ingredients and maybe those would work.
