How many have taken the H1N1 vaccine?

Hello,

I have been debating whether to get the H1N1 vaccine. I am 9 wks pregnant. Before this year, I'd never taken a flu shot in my life.

My RE (whom I trust as he's been dead on with everything so far) said that I should get both, the seasonal and h1n1 and that both were safe, inspite of scares. He said there was an article in the Wired mag (which I haven't read), the gist of which is that it's safe.

I just got the seasonal shot last week. I'm supposed to get the h1n1 tonight (mercury free version), but after reading the previosu h1n1 posts on this forum, I'm having second thoughts.

Those who are against it - I'd love to know specifically why and any supporting links would be great.
Also, how many on this forum have taken it so far?

I have a few hrs to decide and I want to make an informed one!

Thanks!

" I got it last week and it was not the mercury free however the Dr., said the amount of murcery was = to a can of tuna. The risk of getting H1N1 totally out weigh the risk of the shot. I had 0 side effects from it & am so glad that I got it. The Dr. told me that if a prego women gets h1n1 the chance of being hospitalized is 60% and once in the hospital the change of dying is 6% those are real risks if you ask nme that I am not willing to take. Good luck in your decision I hope my story helped you ;)

" I got both. I did get the mercury free ones but my doctor also said that the amount of mercury in the vaccine is equal to a tuna sandwich. Also, it gives the baby the antibodies and protects them for the first six months when they cannot get vaccinated. According to my doctor (she is a high risk OB and specializes in infectious diseases so she has been working w/the CDC re: the vaccine), both flu shots (H1N1 and seasonal) are made the exact same way the only difference is the dead virus. Do what is most comfortable for you. Good luck. "

" I got the preservative free version earlier this week. I haven't experienced any negative effects. My arm wasn't even sore the next day like it was with the regular seasonal flu shot. The seasonal flu shot has been administered to pregnant women for years, and the h1n1 shot is made the same way in the same facilities, just with a different dead virus. I also read that the baby will have some immunity from the shots after birth, and babies can't be given the flu vaccines until six months of age. My doctor strongly recommended it so after looking into it I decided to get it as soon as the preservative free shot was available. My OB's office was offering it to pregnant patients at no charge. "

" I got the regular flu shot about 2 months ago, and the H1N1 shot two weeks ago. I was pretty miserable after the regular flu shot and only had some minor burning with the H1N1 shot. I definitely never had second thoughts about it, I'm asthmatic and have trouble breathing even just walking up the stairs gets me winded, my husband works in a hospital and could easily bring it home, and I want my child to be protected against it. All in all, I feel very confident in the decision I made.

" I usually get the flu shot every year. However, this year is different.. i am almost 11 weeks and have decided not to get either vaccine. Even though i would take the flu vaccine every year i still got the flu... i work in a hospital. I figure if i get the flu i will treat the syptoms as such... take cool baths to keep temp down and i can get my ER to place an iv to give me fluids if neccessary... i just don't want to risk taking a vaccine that is so new when there is no gaurantee that i won't get the flu even if i do take the vaccine. I just don't want to put anything foreign in my body right now. If i get the flu my body will make antibodies just like the vaccine initiates and will get passed to my baby.

I do not fault anyone who chooses to take it... it has to be an individual choice. You must do what you feel is best for you and your baby. "

" I got the regular flu shot at 5 weeks, 3 days and just got the H1N1 shot at 8 weeks, 4 days. I got the regular shots for both.

The way I see it is both recommended by the CDC and other authorities as well as every doctor I have spoken to (quite a few).

I totally understand the hesitancy, I had it too, but all my research lead me to be comfortable with my choice. "

" Thanks for all the replies. I went ahead and got the H1N1 shot as well.
I decided that the known risks of not getting it were worse than the unknown risks of getting it. "

" this reply is late, but I did get the seasonal shot, and will be getting the H1N1. However, my Dr did NOT recommend I receive it in the first trimester. "
