Vegetarian Mom - Carnivore Baby!

I'm creeping up on 10 weeks and I'm finally getting to the cravings portion of pregnancy. For the last 2 months I've barely been able to look at food let alone eat it and I've been getting by on crackers and plain pasta.

Now... much to my dismay.... I'm craving meat. It's been 5 years since I've touched an animal product and last night I almost ate a BBQ pork sandwich - it actually smelled good! (normally meat makes me gag)

This morning I wanted bacon and eggs for breakfast.

I know that if I'm craving meat, I probably need the protein, but I'm having a hard time thinking about eating meat after such a long time without.

Obviously I will not hesitate to compromise my preferences and morals for the health of my baby, but I'm trying to think of some alternatives to eating a poor little pig!

Any suggestions? Or other weird cravings?

" I kind of know how you feel. Im allergic to beef and havent had a bite since I was a little kid. Well these babies want hamburgers. I drive by fast food places salivating lol. BUT as much as I want it, I cant have it. I try to eat chicken sandwiches or turkey burgers to mimic. I dont think it works LOL. Anyway since you dont eat any meat...eggs are good protein,beans,nuts,milk...do you eat fish? b/c that is a good source too. "

" Well, your prenatals should give u what u may be lacking not eating meat. And I assume you have discussed this with your OB. WIth that, if your really craving it, then I say eat it in moderation. I can only speak for myself, but as soon as I gave birth, all the diff cravings I had during my 1st pg completely disappeared. It was like a switch was turned off. So if your worried that u may stick to the meat habit long term, you probably won't. I'll defer to the other ladies if they experienced the same "

" Pumpkin seeds have a ton of protein per serving if you feel that protein is what you need. "

" Yum! Pumpkin seeds sound delicious!!!

I used to make them with my mom at Halloween every year! Maybe its' time to go carve out about 20 and toast them up.

I eat eggs, and I've been drinking milk, which helps. I even took a little bite the other day, but the taste turned my stomach. I guess I'll stick to PB&J for now and see how that goes! "

" Dear Hopeful,
I went vegetarian when I was 13, I'm now 25 and 21 weeks pregnant with my first. I can now say that as of this week, I am no longer vegetarian. I can't believe it. I always was getting cravings for meat, but I finally caved. My boyfriend was eating these awesomely crispy looking, good smelling chicken tenders from the deli at Wal-Mart, and he told me to smell it. OMG, it smelled so good. I was like, "baby wants chicken!" and I took 3 bites. The next day, we were at wal-mart buying some more for dinner!! AND I also bought some fried shrimps to eat!!!
I plan on limiting myself to only poultry and some seafood, and I also have the full intent to return to vegetarianism after baby's born.
You will make the decision that is right for you. Good luck! "

" oh, as for suggestions on a piggy alternative---I used to buy tempeh, cut it in thin slices, and pan fry it til it's brown, then add bbq sauce and let it simmer for a bit. I would put it on one of those chewy deli rolls and it was my BBQ pork sammy alternative! It was tasty too. You could add sauteed onions and peppers too. "

" Im not a vegitarian but I dont drink milk... I think of human milk being for humans and well cow milk is for baby cows. I cant stand the texture and the smell much less the taste. But all my kids wanted milk... and by the gallons. With my daughter it was olvaltine so at least it changed the smell and taste... but this baby wants milk flat out by its self milk.... and Im not talking a small 6 ounce cup. I end up taking my cup from the convience store and filling it full... mind you I get the 52 ounce cups from quick trip.... thats a lot of damn milk and I drink ever last drop too.... but it has to be milk from one of 2 manufactures in the plastic gallons and it has to be supper cold.... or forget it.... once baby is born I loose the craving and go anoughter 5 years until I drink it again.

My daughter even gets the littel 8 ounce personal bottles of flavored milk and I cant stand the smell much less the taste of them.... like I said its very specific "
