Dilating?

OK, So I'm 37 weeks 1 day pregnant and I had a doctor's appointment yesterday. He told me that I'm 1cm dilated and 70% effaced. This sounded VERY exciting to me, but he just went on about business as usual and scheduled me for my next appointment in a week. I know some women can stay like this for weeks whereas other's go from 1-10 in the same day. I'm just curious to hear other people's stories, thoughts, etc.

Once you started dilating, how long was it before you delivered...how long can I stay at 1 without actually being in labor?

Thanks!

" Ooh...exciting news. Even if it won't be in the next 24 hours it's gotta be soon right?

Being just 6 weeks into my pregnancy journey with my first baby I don't have any experience with this but all I can say is try and relax before the big event
xx "

" As you stated, some women will go into labor that day and some are dilated like that for weeks. Dilation only means that your body is preparing for labor, it is no indication of when or how soon you will actually go into labor. It's a sign that your body is doing what it's suppose too! Vaginal exams are honestly not necessary, as they only give you a false sense of when you might go into labor. "

" Aww, too bad I was getting kinda excited, but I'll reign myself in. :(.

Hnelson, just curious, why were they doing a vaginal exam on you (to check for dilation) all the way back at 33 weeks?

Thanks for the feedback ladies! "

" I'm right there with you mrsvq! I went to the doc on Thursday @ 37wks 2days and he advised me that I was 2cm dilated and 80% effaced. I was really excited, but then he said it could be a couple of days.......or it could be 3wks. Regardless though, it'll be soon for the both of us. Good luck with everything!! "
