Advice:
Ultrasound?

Question-
Is it still necessary now-a-days to drink 500 gallons of water before your ultrasound? The other day, I went to my perinatologist and had my first regular (non vaginal) u/s. I didn't drink any water, they did not tell me to. However, one of my friends who is not seeing a perinatologist, had to drink all this water when she got her u/s. What is the rhyme or reason for this? Is it because I'm only 11 weeks, or is it because the perinatologist's equipment is so much more sophisticated than a regular OB?

I'm just curious.

" I was told when I went for my vaginal ultrasound that they needed an empty bladder. The tech actually asked me if I needed to go before hand. With the external, I think it depends on how far along you are. If it's still early, the full bladder would push the uterus up higher. If it's later the baby is big enough so it's not a problem.

Oh wait, I just reread your e-mail. Maybe it's the tech's preference! "

" I had an ultrasound done at almost 15 weeks with my peri and I did not have a full bladder. I actually had an empty one because they had me do the urine test and they had no problem. I think that it depends on how far along you are. "

" NO WAY and it is great, though by the time they are done pushing and moving all around on your belly you will still have to pee after wards. "

" You shouldn't need to...i was told they don't do that anymore. esp with the vaginal ultrasounds. it's not necessary, and that's probably what you will get at 11 wks. i don't think they do the belly ones til either 12 or 16...can't remember. but either way, i was told you didn't have to have a full bladder. " Okay, so I drank lots of water before I went, and the u/s tech made me go and empty my bladder b/c she couldn't see anything! I actually had to do that twice. So--not so much. Just go on about your regular day. "

" The U/S you do not have to. Actually they make me give a urine sample as soon as I get there and I'm 14wks 5days. "

" I had an u/s at 22 weeks and they had me drink lots of water before. The tech took one picture with my full bladder and then I was able to go relieve myself.

I just had an u/s today at 25 1/2 weeks and no full bladder. It might depend on what they want to look at??

I had a regular u/s at 11 weeks and had to have a full bladder to push my uterus up so they could do a non-vag one. "

" When I went for my last Ultra sound at 20 weeks (I am now 28 weeks) I had to pee soo bad and asked if I could and they said no the Ultra Sound is more effective when you have a full blatter, yet they never told me to come in with a full blatter...it just happened that way. So I guess it just depends on the doctor. "

" I am having an u/s at 19 weeks and they told me to start drinking water 1 1/2hrs before my appt because I had to have a full bladder. I think they can probably see better when you have a full bladder. There are other normal tests where they have to have a full bladder to see what's going on with other issues so I am sure it's the same with an u/s. It probably depends on how far along you are! I have also noticed from reading a lot of posts how different doctors and hospitals are about how they do things... "
