First Visit to Endocrinologist--Questions

We recently took our 7 1/2 year old daughter to the doctor with concerns of precocious puberty. She has developed pubic hair. The doctor did some blood tests for the following:
Luteinizing Hormone (No results yet) Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) (Results: LOW) DHEA Sulfate (Results: Normal) Testosterone (Results: Normal) We have an appointment to see a Pediatric Endocrinologist at the end of this month. Can anyone tell me what we can expect to happen at our first visit with the endocrinologist? I would like to prepare my daughter for what will happen with exam/tests/etc. Also, everything I've been reading says that a low result of FSH may indicate: • An area of the brain (the hypothalamus or pituitary gland) is not functioning properly. • A tumor is present that interferes with the brain's ability to control FSH production. Has anyone else experienced LOW results with the FSH? Generally it seems that HIGH values in children may mean that puberty is about to start. So I'm not sure that this is CPP. I am scared and feel like the more I read the more scared I am for her... Posted on 06/05/09, 03:06 pm |

hi,
Our first visit was like any normal yearly physical. Ht, wt, bp and lots of questions.By lots of questions I mean our endo sent us a 20 page medical history report that needed to be filled out before we visited and we went over it on the first visit. Our endo also went over the blood test results and scheduled other tests based on the results. We spent about 45 minutes in the office. My daughter had her DS and a book to read and was given crayons by the nurse. Yes, it is scary. But just remember you are doing this for your child so that she will be healthy. A friend of mine told me to stop reading things on the internet . I did stop until after we had more tests, more results and few more visits with our Endo. and that helped! Good luck !

Thank you for your words...I did stop reading things on the internet and focused on the idea that whatever was going on we would get through it and that we were going to get some answers.
Her appointment was Monday...all her blood test results were fine (all low or normal for her age) and the Pedio Endo didn't feel any other signs were there for PP. She did have to have a bone age test done and another blood test for something with Thyroid, but we won't get the results back for another week or so. So we are waiting on those, but right now he felt that the early pubic hair was just an isolated thing and although he couldn't give us an explanation of why, he just said sometimes that happens. He said he would be very surprised if the bone age didn't come back normal for her age. I hope he is right...
