I read about Celexa here, and it seemed like it was worth a try so I asked my doctor for it. I cannot believe how much it is helping me. This is my 1st cycle on it. I am in full-blown PMS right now & I definitely feel this medication doing it's job. I can actually feel myself sprialing down when it's wearing off. When it's working, I can feel it pushing the crazy, emotional, wild, angry, irritable, etc. feelings away. I don't feel so overwhelmed by every little thing, and my husband is not getting on my nerves like he usually does. This seems like too good to be true, and I am wondering what the catch is? The plan is for me to take it while I'm PMSing & then stop after my cycle until the next one. My question is what happens when you stop taking it? Am I going to crash into an emotional breakdown? Anyone have the answer to this question? I feel so good, I'm afraid to go off. But I want to go off when I'm suppose to because I don't want it to lose it's effectiveness.

I'm so glad that Celexa is working for you! I have also found it hugely helpful --in fact, it's the only SSRI or medication that has been able to target my PMS/PMDD symptoms. I have fairly chronic depression, so I take 20 mg Celexa throughout the month, but increase it to 30 mg (one and a half tablets) 10 days prior to my period. I also do weekly psychotherapy. My depression is well controlled and, between the Celexa and the techniques I learn in therapy, the PMDD symptoms are much more manageable. If you tend to have a baseline depression, you might speak with your doctor about taking the drug throughout the month and increasing it several days pre-menstrually. Best of luck to you!

Please tell me more about Celexa. I saw something about it online elsewhere & apparently it is also helpful for Fibromyalgia, which I have. I'm trying to find solutions that help with both conditions but that do not give rise to risky or unpleasant side effects. Have you experienced any side effect along with the benefits you described?

Well, like I said, I read about it hear. I had never heard of it before. Being as desperate as I was for some relief I figured I'd give it a try. It has really been the thing that has helped more than anything else. I have no side effects from it. The first week or so, it made me a little giddy but that went away & I now I'm fine. I also realized that I need to take it everyday, not just while PMSing. My doctor agreed & wrote the Rx for one tablet everyday & increase it to two tablets 2 weeks before my period. This has been working like a charm for me. I just hope it lasts, that the effects don't wear off. Thats what happened with the Prozac - although the Prozac was NEVER as effective as this. It's been 2 months now, and my husband cannot even tell when I'm PMSing! It has also helped with the intensity of my migraines which I was not expecting! I suggest giving it a try. Just keep in mind everyone is different. What have you tried so far? Good luck!

Thanks so much for yr insights! Years ago, I tried Prozac. All it did was make my mouth dry & my hands shaky. I was incredibly embarrassed by this bec it made me look like an alcoholic & I don't even drink at all! It did little for my symptoms so I soon discontinued using it. I've also tried all the otc stuff. Advil helps with the physical discomfort, but clearly, I need something else. Your story is encouraging & gives me hope for my own relief. Coming here was a last resort as I'd judt about given up. Thanks again!

I never had any side effects with prozac, it actually did help take the edge off for a while. But as I got older & after I had my kids it was like taking nothing, so why bother. I also tried Zoloft - nothing, and Wellbutrin - that was a nightmare, very bad side effects. Celexa has been a Godsend for me so far, in combination with my IUD - I actually feel human again. Good luck, & let me know how it goes.
