Question ?:
What's the minimum requirement for obtaining professional mental health treatment in your region, Canadian or American (European for that matter)?? I read posts like from Marie and Nature Beauty below and it makes me furious these ladies are treated in such a malicious and belligerent manner. Forget mental health, what about simple human respect with decency and decorum ? Where is that to be found in mental health ?? How is an individual in need of services supposed to, 1) find safe and reliable services, and 2) secure and obtain such ?? Internet referrals can easily get you killed. So just how do you folk with such positive remarks find your mental health professionals? The other 99% of us simply deserve better. Tom S. in Tn. Posted on 11/09/09, 07:11 am |

All I can say Tom is what I usually say. For PTSD in particular it's vital that we all find a Trauma or PTSD specialist. A good indicator is a therapist who is certified for EMDR by EMDRIA or the international version of this organization (or obviously the equivalent in your country if not in the US as many of our group members locations indicate).
It's not that you or any of us in particular should use EMDR, but the fact that it's in a PDoc or Therapist's toolkit of skills to help us heal is a good indication of the fact that they specialize in Trauma and PTSD. (Note I say CERTIFIED... there are many therapists and PDocs out there who claim knowledge of EMDR and push it. ASK to SEE their current certification!!! And if they have the certification, know that they MAY use it as a tool to heal, not insist that it be used regardless of your needs). Aside from that, even if you find a specialist, you may have to try several, as not all patients click will all Therapists or PDocs. It still may take time to make sure that the professional is right FOR YOU. I saw the posts from Marie and NatureBeauty.... and this is exactly my thoughts when reading their posts. D.
