My mother was just diagnosed with PTSD but not due to one serious trauma. Same with my uncle. They were diagnosed based on a lifetime of "small" (mom's word) traumas that were never dealt with, such as the loss of their parents and my mother's issues with her children. She raised a severely mentally ill son, was in abusive relationships, dealt with me being molested, had a breakdown surrounding the birth of my youngest brother. Was anyone else dx'd with PTSD in their 40's because of multiple traumas? I'm trying to figure out how to help her, because mine is related to a single incident of abuse so treatment is drastically different.

" JustBrandi,

I have multiple traumas, but all are severe, and consequently more complex. Complicated.

I want to respond, but am in the middle of my employment search. Will respond later with the attention it deserves. "

" yes totally yes. I have Complex PTSD from aholes parents. Its like being in captivity, it drives you insane.
You prolly have more PTSD than you think being around your mom.

Do not let anyone or her tell you that she got PTSD cuz of your issues. That is BS!
It is entirely mothers reposibility to handle her childrens issues. If she was mentally too weak to handle children that is her problem. You mother is suppose to be there for you, no excuses. "

" My best suggestion would be to make sure to focus on dealing with your own Ptsd right now! Is your Mother actually seeking help for dealing with her PTSD? It only really works if the person is willing to help themselves! Just curious for more info on the situation! "

" Her diagnosis seems realistic to me. It would be best for anyone when first diagnosed with this issue to have some sessions with a a really well trained and thoughtful psychologist or psychotherapist who can help sort out the complicated web of issues. My sympathies to you all. It is never easy no matter what the cause. "

" I realized I had problems, which I would now describe as PTSD, in my early 40's. This was after being raped, living with an alcoholic PTSD suffering Korean War vet for a number of years. I sought healing for myself, discovered therapeutic nutrition, and later Primal Scream Therapy. Both helped tremendously. I am 70 now, from 1996 thru 2005 was caring for my dying mother, dealing with my father's death and messy estate issues, my husband's Alzheimers and death. Then the city came down on my head because of neglected property issues, so in that past 2 years have been dealing with Board of Condemnation and related issues.

Because of what I learned to deal with the earlier PTSD, I am still a cheerful person, in a good love relationship, and think I will get my property fixed in time to beat the city's demands. The books that got me started were Let's Eat Right to Keep Fit, by Adelle Davis, and The Primal Scream by Arthur Janov. They should be available in libraries or on ebay. I strongly recommend reading both books as ways to learn to take care of yourself and others, including your mother. "

" I have complex post traumatic stress disorder, too. I experienced emotional, physical and sexual abuse as a child and was in a horribly abusive marriage for ten years. It's like I was riding the 'trauma train'. We co-create so much of our misery reenacting earlier trauma. *sigh* I was diagnosed in my early thirties and have been receiving treatment of some sort for about 15 years. I wish I could say there is a quick fix, but there isn't.

One of the best books I've read on complex post traumatic stress disorder (which I'm thinking you have, too, based on the history you've alluded to) is called "Trauma and Recovery" by Judith Herman. I highly recommend it.

As DeuceBMG said earlier, try to focus on your own recovery and let your mom tend to hers. I hope you are in counselling because you definitely need ongoing support to heal from PTSD. There is hope at the end of the tunnel. Trust in the process. Take good care of yourself. "
