Discussion:
Weight Gain & Anti-Psychotics

I was reading in this book I got at the library called:

Healing Anxiety & Depression
by Dr. Daniel G. Amen, MD & Lisa C. Routh, MD

They were discussing weight gain and anti-psychotics, like Seroquel, which I am on, and Zyprexa, Geodon, Abilify and others.

They recommend to their patients to take an H2 Blocker...like Axid 300mg, or Cimetidine, which is Pepcid. These help decrease the acid in your stomach.

Not sure how that relates to helping keep the weight off...but I do notice I have some new onset of heartburn, which I never had before.

I think I am going to add it to my regime...another pill to buy, more money, but if it works, hey, its worth it...I don't have the energy yet to exercise.

Dr. Amen has written some interesting stuff on anxiety/depression/ADD. He is on the cutting edge of NeuroPsychiatry, using Brain Imaging to help diagnose and treat patients.

Makes a lot of sense to me as I have read his books a few years ago when I thought my hubby had ADD, and I realized there were different types of ADD, and suggested a mood stabilizer, an anti-convulsant, and his Psychiatrist balked at the notion of it. He didn't agree with the NeuroPsychiatry.

He is now seeing a NeuroPsychiatrist and is on Neurontin, so I am hopeful for some change for him now.

Check out Dr. Amen's website also.

He uses Brain SPECT images, and has some uploaded on his site. Pretty Interesting.

" Interesting, I know I go though the rolaids and the crazy cravings on the Seroquel.Don't know weather to attribute the heartburn and gas attacks that feel like a heart attack to the Seroquel or my IBS though. "

" BitemeFrog...I had those crazy cravings too...and put on 25 lbs...

My Pdoc put me on Topamax, which is a mood stabilizer, but she put me on it primarily to decrease the cravings, and decrease my appetite, and it worked for me. I am on 100 mg a day.

I had IBS issues BEFORE being formally diagnosed with PTSD. Never formally diagnosed with IBS, but I have all the symptoms of it.

My heartburn didn't start until I started putting weight on?? but, I didn't even get heartburn when I was pregnant, and I gained 50 lbs each time, which was a boat load for me, only 5'0 and weighed 100-114 pre-preggo. Lost it all though, no exercise, breastfed though.

I am thinking maybe heartburn r/t Seroquel too. I took a Zantac last night when I woke up with it. That's all I had.

Topamax helped...you might consider asking about it...I only eat now 2x/day...which is back to normal for me. No snacky urges, was never snacky to begin with anyways, but on Seroquel, whoa, no holding back...bring on the sweets, I gorged until I was so sick.

I am proud of you Tarns for losing that weight...I think it helped you were into exercising beforehand too.

If I had a friend to go with me, I think I would be more inclined to go to the gym and do Yoga and Zumba. "

But, I have lost all that weight, and am healthy~ glad to have read this post...thank you for sharing!!!! I know from personal experience that it SUCKS to be on medication which makes you gain weight. "

" I had been on Paxil for a few years and also Nuerontin for the nerve pain. Both contributed to almost a 50lb weight gain! It was awful.
Now for the past year I've been on Wellbutrin and have slowly lost the weight. I am finally back to regular size clothes and feel better too. The pdoc recently rx'd Prozac as a little boost to get me through an acute flare up. But, I am hardly taking it. I noticed within days that it not only increased my appetite but made my affect flat. Sure it kept me from crying all day ~ but, I felt nothing and that is almost worse. "
