I haven't had nightmares in a long time but the last two days I have had bad ones.

The first one, I was viewing a scene on the street from above. I saw my mother (who abused me as a child and into adult hood, and passed away this past December 2 days after my birthday) walking....with greyed hair into the place she used to work. Then I moved through the air to a dark, VERY dark place and I was with her in the coffin and she was talking to me. The the dream moved from there, to the basement where I was raped as a 14 yr old girl by my boyfriend at the time. I saw just his lower half (you get the idea) paritally through the dark and heard him talking. I woke up crying.

Then last night.I went to bed, and had this "nightmare" where I had walked though this crowded room, and saw my mother from a distance. Then all of a sudden her arms were around me, and she was crying, and telling my what a pretty house I have, and how its going to be ok, and that shes proud of me.

Now with the above those are things she would have never of said in RL because of the type of person she was.

My fiance says....you had MSG last night....thats why you don't feel well today and had the nightmares. I don't normally eat MSG and one of the side effect are nightmares.
But.....

Does anyone ever have what I call "remission" of the nightmares and have like a couple weeks where you're good...then BAM?

" I am a true believer that nightmares are all about emotion rather than any particular dream symbology, so to me it doesn't matter if its a shark or a toothbrush chasing you, its how you feel about the situation. I used to be plagued by nightmares when I was a kid, the way I got over them was partly growth, partly the fact that I realized that a dream doesn't affect or hurt my waking life in any form other than my behaviour as a result of experiencing the dream...

the thing with nightmares is, ironically if you could simply ignore them they wouldn't be a problem, but because thats not possible the dream situation brings you into a state of awareness/alertness, due to that you take in more detail/notice/sensory data about the situation itself, which makes you even more scared because you are being faced with a situation that you have now seen/noticed theres even more to be scared of... and you'll be in a position to more readily notice something like this again...

The dream can often perpetuates itself that way... since I cannot tell you how you feel, (nor do I believe anyone can, aside perhaps from guessing or at least attempting to empathise) it is you who has to learn to overcome this...

All I can do is try to keep you informed in a way that perhaps something I said may occur to you during the dream, hopefully a truth that eases the situation, that you remember all your doing is dreaming... (nightmares at least are by definition lucid dreams)...

With any luck, like me you may come out of this with the gift of lucid dreams of your own chosing, rather than being stuck in the horror of one you appear to have no control over...

The other, imho harder option is to confront them, see them for what they truly are by facing the nightmare, which is also easy to say but difficult to do... this should either eventually lead to desensitization (ie, you get so used to the nightmare it no longer has the effect of scaring you... ) or... simple awareness of the dream itself being merely a dream...

Nightmares are, by definition a dream that is lucid, if you are lucky, you will come out of this with a gift, like I did, of wonderful Lucid dreams...

However this type of dream your having, and its direct basis in reality, and your apparent "remission" periods are quite unlike any of the nightmares that I have come across with other people, so I'm not sure exactly how much of this will help you or is relevant in your case... all I can do is say I wish you well and good luck in your future...

Hope this helps... and, of course, as always, heres to having sweet dreams :)... "

" Me too.... I go for many months at a time without having any nightmares at all... then I'll have another one. There are only a few different ones I have, and they always tend to be the same ones, sometimes they vary slightly i detail, but they are the same nightmares. HUGS "
