I haven't had nightmares in a long time but the last two days I have had bad ones.

The first one, I was viewing a scene on the street from above. I saw my mother (who abused me as a child and into adult hood, and passed away this past December 2 days after my birthday) walking....with greyed hair into the place she used to work. Then I moved through the air to a dark, VERY dark place and I was with her in the coffin and she was talking to me. The the dream moved from there, to the basement where I was raped as a 14 yr old girl by my boyfriend at the time. I saw just his lower half (you get the idea) paritally through the dark and heard him talking. I woke up crying.

Then last night.I went to bed, and had this "nightmare" where I had walked though this crowded room, and saw my mother from a distance. Then all of a sudden her arms were around me, and she was crying, and telling my what a pretty house I have, and how its going to be ok, and that shes proud of me.

Now with the above those are things she would have never of said in RL because of the type of person she was.

My fiance says....you had MSG last night....thats why you don't feel well today and had the nightmares. I don't normally eat MSG and one of the side effect are nightmares.
But.....

Does anyone ever have what I call "remission" of the nightmares and have like a couple weeks where you're good...then BAM?

" I went years without nightmares, and lately they've been springing back up on me too. Fortunately, when I was first getting over them, I'd already found a way to prevent or make them less real.

I pick a movie I can tolerate and watch it a million times, then stick it in the DVD player on low-ish volume when I go to bed. When you're asleep, your vision and auditory senses still stay alert to the outside world... so if you're in a nightmare and your body is hearing and seeing familiar things (music, scripts, flickering of the TV), it really helps you remember you're just dreaming and that you're not in any real danger.

Mind you, it doesn't ALWAYS work, and it takes a while to train yourself to do this. I use Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, or other children-type movies where there is still some real-world absurdity to remind me, it's just a dream and I'm going to be okay.

And I don't think it's the MSG :) "

" All the time and they actually come in phases. When i do get them i wake up so freaked out panic striken and sometimes ball my eyes out, then they'll go away for awhile. It seems i either have nightmares, sleep amazingly or just dont sleep at all.. But to answer your question, most definatley. Your not alone. "

" I used to have nightmares on a regular basis, but now they only hit during times of stress. I hadn't had them in awhile until I decided to move back to a city an hour away from my parents. Then, I started having ones where my mom was trying to kill me. But since I've been back I havent had them "

" I have nightmares when a new topic I'm going to work on in therapy "bubbles up." After the nightmare, it comes more & more into my consciousness, until I have a distinct feeling or idea to work on in therapy. "

" My house burned to the ground in Feb 2007. Although everyone was able to get out and I saved most of our pets, it did not bother me much until recently.

Now I wake up at least once or twice a week from a nightmare or night terrors, scared to death, almost unable to breathe or even move.

I can only hope time will take care of this. "
