"A significant percentage of adults who suffered ongoing abuse or neglect in childhood suffer from Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. One of the most difficult features of this type of PTSD is extreme susceptibility to painful emotional flashbacks. Emotional flashbacks are sudden and often prolonged regressions ('amygdala hijackings') to the frightening circumstances of childhood. They are typically experienced as intense and confusing episodes of fear and/or despair - or as sorrowful and/or enraged reactions to this fear and despair. Emotional flashbacks are especially painful because the inner critic typically overlays them with toxic shame, inhibiting the individual from seeking comfort and support, isolating him in an overwhelming and humiliating sense of defectiveness.

Because most emotional flashbacks do not have a visual or memory component to them, the triggered individual rarely realizes that she is re-experiencing a traumatic time from childhood."

I highly recommend that anyone with CPTSD check out this site. I had no idea what I was experiencing were emotional flashbacks until I stumbled upon this site. I've been having emotional flashbacks since I was in my early teens but was misdiagnosed with panic attacks since they look similar on the outside. Most therapists and doctors have never heard of emotional flashbacks, even those familiar with trauma. I use Pete's advice on getting through emotional flashbacks and it has helped me tremendously.

" Thanks for posting this. I had read his site previously and it really helped me to understand what I was going through.
No Dr or therapist explained emotional flashbacks to me. Visual, tactile, flashbacks, yes, even those it took me months to come to terms with.

One therapist did recommend that when I was feeling fear or pain or .. to ask myself how old I felt.
This helped me to realize what traumas were causing what feelings at a specific time. I don't do this all of the time, but it can help with some confusion, for those of us with multiple traumas over many years.

Pete Walker is exceptional in his explainations. So much good information. He has a pdf link on the bottom of the page to save permanently.

Thanks,
carrie "

" VERY informative.

I was told I was catastrophising, which made me feel like it was my fault somehow.

Now I think it's emotional flashbacks. Semantics are important to me. Although all flashbacks are emotional, the word emotion attaches meaning for me. I am a very emotional being. "

" this is a really good site, i'll have to read it fully when i have time. i'll have to check out the part on catastrophizing, i used to be accused of that also. i read the self-pity section which seemed really good. unfortunately, i was one of the ones who went overboard with it, to the point where it was dysfunctional. so now it just seems like such a dangerous thing to me, because i was so lost in it for so many years. is self-pity healing, in the proper amounts? " Soft Monkey,

I think self pity can be good in balance. We need to grieve for ourselves.
I have had no self pity and have been working on getting in touch with emotions to get out of denial and grieve.

hugs,
carrie "
