My late husband had PTSD and survivor guilt because of his Korea combat experiences. Because so many had died, including almost 1/2 of his graduating class, he felt unconsciously that he had no right to have a life. When we were married, he started drinking and worked systematically to destroy our marriage. Eventually, my own trauma drove me into therapy, and I was eventually able to get him the help he needed. We had a few reasonably good years before he developed Alzheimers and eventually died.lOur oldest son decided to grow up tougher and stronger than his father. He will soon head for Afghanistan, he is not a particularly happy person.
Bottom line, don't let your own guilt destroy the lives of others. Get the help you need.
