This is a high-level book on the recovery from various types of trauma. It is written at the level of professionals or for people wanting to read in-depth about trauma in general and healing from it.
PART I covers Traumatic Disorders: A Forgotten History, Terror, Disconnection, Captivity, Child Abuse, and A New Diagnosis. PART II covers the Stages of Recovery: A Healing Relationship, Safety, Remembrance and Mourning, Reconnection, and Commonality. There is an Afterword: "The Dialectic of Trauma Continues". There are extensive notes and a complete index. |

This book helped me to understand my condition. I learned that it was way less my fault than I thought. It was a culture, a family, and few ill people that caused my pain. It really helped me find some understanding in the huge mountain of emotions I was going through.
I especially liked the history section and how Freud first wrote about hysteria and the talking cure. He touched on sexual abuse but suffered such a huge backlash that he had to recant. Unfortunately we haven't come very far. One of my favorite books on the topic.
