surgery complications?

i was scheduled for a routine surgery, but after yet another blood test coming out the same, i was told i need to see a hematologist. the results pointed to polycythemia vera, according to my dad who's a doc.

can i ask what precautions surgeons take for people with pv? waiting to see a hematologist will take some time, and postpone this operation which is annoying. but i guess i've to wait to see what this specialist says, to give the okay for surgery.

thanks for your replies, if you know of what can be given for this condition during surgery. i'd like to research the options since i'm sensitive to many meds out there.

regards,

nikL

" the blood doc had found a lupus anti-coagulant as a reason for the extended pt/ptt (clotting time). they are going to retest me on monday before deciding on doing surgery. it was cancelled a month ago, and i sure hope it;s not postponed any longer, as the new date is his wednesday for the procedure.

my hct is 17 and the blood doc said 50%. he said it's high but my surgery should be fine. meanwhile, the ent surgeon doesn't agree. he wants to take out my adenoids, which could be cancerous, but this back and forth between the ent and the hem is driving me nuts!

what am i supposed to do? how is polycythemia treated during surgery? thanks for any advice. "

" Hello, I have polycythemia vera. I was diagnosed about 2 years ago. I take hydroxyurea. It's a form of chemo.. I didn't know I had a high red blood cell count until a routine Dr. visit. That's about all I know about it. I had a bone marrow test and it was clean so I was really thankful for that. The risk's we have are heart attacks or strokes. I also take a low dose asprin. Hope that helps. God Bless You, Dereise.... "
