Hello....I was just started on Metformin yesterday (Tuesday). Started on 500mg/day and will be working up to 2000mg/day. My doctor told me that I will probably have nausea and some "loose stools" for a while then once I get feeling better, add another pill and will probably feel worse again then when I feel better add another pill, etc until I reach 4 pills. I'm so ready to get help for my PCOS....but I'm wondering how hard the Metformin has been for everyone...?? Has it been that bad?? Thanks!

Hi I also had bad side effects from taking metformin the nausea and loose stools .I have been on metformin on and off for 4 years now but still the side effects remain .I also started slow and gradually increased to 1500mg .My doc also advised i start at night i think it did help I noticed taking it while eating does help .I also agree that eating certain foods did worsen the nausea, foods high in sugar especially. Also drink plenty of water which will help u from feeling dehydrated and will also help with the energy.

Hi. I've had minimal side effects since starting Metformin back in the beginning of September. I know that everyone reacts differently to medication but I think a big part of the success I've had with Metformin has to do with the fact that my Endocrinologist got me to start at a very low dose, and very slowly increase the amount I was taking. She suggested starting in the evening after eating dinner, 1/2 a 500mg (250mg daily total)tablet for one week. The second week I was to take 1/2 tablet in the morning after breakfast and the other half again in the evening after dinner (500mg daily total). The third week, continue with 1/2 tablet after breakfast, and then 1 whole tablet with dinner (750mg daily total). Fourth week, 1 tablet with breakfast and one tablet with dinner (1000mg). I continued adding 1/2 tablets in the evening and morning each week until I reached 2000mg. I hope this helps! I still am waiting to notice changes in my body (period) but am very hopeful.
