Hello....I was just started on Metformin yesterday (Tuesday). Started on 500mg/day and will be working up to 2000mg/day. My doctor told me that I will probably have nausea and some "loose stools" for a while then once I get feeling better, add another pill and will probably feel worse again then when I feel better add another pill, etc until I reach 4 pills. I'm so ready to get help for my PCOS....but I'm wondering how hard the Metformin has been for everyone...?? Has it been that bad?? Thanks!

" I did not feel as sick as I had expected after reading nausea and a bad tummy like you mentioned. I also had a head ache that just did not seem to go away, and I had to pee very frequently. My doc told me to increase with 500mg each week until I reached 1500mg/day but it was not as bad as I thought it would be. One piece of advice though, you might find that you will react differently to certain foods when taking Metformin. For some reason, when I occasionally eat something high in carbs or red meat, I get a really bad stomach. That is just in my experience though :)

Seeing that my cysts are gone now due to the Metformin, any side effect was worth it so I wish you the best of luck with your treatment :) "

" Thanks so much for your reply. I've got to get up to 2000mg/day and I'm just a little nervous about it. Like you, though, I've been through so much and am expecting so many great things from this medication that I don't think I will mind the side effects. Thanks so much!! "

" sick is an understatemnt for how sick i was. The first day i was soooooo sick and then from then on I had loose stools (really bad, like i couldnt leave the house) for about a month. My body did not take it very well. I even stoped taking it and reefused to take it again until my new dov told me to. She said start out slowly with a low does at first, i did that and it seemed to help. Good luck! "

" Manda23 ~ What dose did you start out on when you got so sick? I'm starting out at 500mg and am working up to 2000mg. Once you reached your goal dosage did you eventually start feeling better? "

" I have been horribly sick the past few days, and I just started on Sat. I feel that whatever side effects I go through are worth it in the long run. I do feel that my appitite has gone down. "

" I was going to ask the same type of question, as I recently started Metformin, and I have loose stools pretty bad, like can't leave the house kind...mainly in the morning. I am on 500 and working my way up to 2000. Seems like a rough journey!!!

It should be worth it though!
Best wishes! "

" The first time I went on Metformin I started with 500mg a day and worked my way up to 2000mg without many side effects. I had some occassional nausea and heartburn, but it was barable. I also got pregnant within the first couple of months. Unfortunately, I miscarried. When I went back on the Metformin I didn't realize that it was making me sick. By the time I got back up to 2000mg I was throwing up regularly and was always tired. I'm off it now, but my periods are gone again. I'm considering going back on because it does work so well, but I had terrible side effects. "

" Hey - I started Metformin in September, at 1000mg/day. My first week was terrible! I was sick every morning ("loose stools"), and every night, usually within an hour of eating/taking the medication. It literally only lasted a week for me, and then I was good! However, my doc said if it didn't start my period within two months, he'd increase me to 2000mg. I just started this 2 days ago - and immediately I started getting the same symptoms as the first time around. ;) I'm hoping it again, only lasts a week!

Hang in there! Hopefully it will get better quickly for you. It's different for everyone. Like Mia said, some foods may aggravate it more - but in the beginning, odds are everything will bug you.

It will be worth it I figure!! "
