How to Make Your Period Come (Serious or Not!) :)

I haven't had a period since April 23 and I'm pretty nervous about it. Usually I joke that Aunt Flo is fond of "taking the summer off," but it's been nearly 4 months and she's not usually away for THIS long!

The last time I went for a super-duper long time without a period (this was maybe 5 years ago), my former gynecologist gave me Provera, which essentially turned me into an insane person. I have since found out that I have porphyria, which makes me very sensitive to hormone changes. So I'm thinking that I need to figure out another way -- hopefully NOT involving the induction of synthetic hormones -- to coax Aunt Flo into showing up around here!

Ideas that I have tried in the past...

Parsley. I have read that parsley stimulates the uterus, and will sometimes induce light contractions which may help matters. (I think this *might* have worked once or twice for me, thought the last time was not successful.)

Vitamin C. Ditto, but it made my stomach a wreck, so not going there again.

Black/Blue Cohosh. I've tried this, but not much success. Now I'm worried about using it because I'm not sure if it'll induce a porphyria attack.

Wearing White Underwear/Pants & Going Without a Pad/Tampon. This has worked like a charm for me many times! Unfortunately, it hasn't been helping as of late.

Crunches. These have also helped me before, but aren't currently working.

Orgasms. Another thing that has helped me in the past, but hasn't done much lately.

Being Around Other Women. I have never noticed any effects, but I since I work at home, I have gone weeks without seeing any other people besides my husband. So I have no real way of knowing.

... So what kinds of things does everyone else try when they're hoping to get Aunt Flo to arrive? I don't care if it's a serious thing or a silly thing, I'd try anything at all at this point. I hope that you ladies will post some suggestions or ideas... or even stories about stuff that DOESN'T work! Let's exchange some good information and/or laughs! :)

" I know that not being prepared has definitely worked for me in the past too...as you mentioned, wearing white undies and not having tampons available!
I am new to PCOS, just found out 3 days ago that I have it, but isn't it common to not get your period because of it? I also haven't had a period since April. My doctor is starting me on Metformin. If that doesn't help with regulating my cycle again, she said I'd have to go back on birth control for awhile. I'm not looking forward to that because I'd like to have children soon. But if I don't start ovulating again, I guess I could possibly never have children at all...so it will be worth waiting a little longer.
Anyway, what I am getting at is, are you on birth control and your periods still aren't regular? "

" Hi! I was diganosed in 2000 after 3 years of *constant* bleeding. (I was young, poor, and scared... so put off going to the doctor as looooong as possible.) My gynie put me on birth control, Mircette, which I was on for several years. It stopped the bleeding, but I still skipped periods pretty often, and I had some pretty bad side effects (nausea/migraines/etc) until I stopped taking it around 2004. My gynecologist didn't prescribe anything else, she just told me to lose weight! Because that's sooooo easy with PCOS! *rolling eyes*

Recently I have been diagnosed with porphyria, which would explain why I never got used to the pill -- hormonal changes can make me extremely ill and provoke porphyria "attacks" which in some people can be fatal. (Mine have sucked, but never been THAT severe!)

It is *very* common to skip periods if you have PCOS... I've heard that some ladies only get theirs a few times a year. (I have even heard of ladies who've gone longer than that!) For me, it's normal to skip 1 or 2 every few months, but we're coming up onto number 4 and things are still not flowing! :P 4 months isn't too bad compared to some people though... so let's not panic yet!

Metformin should help with your cycle though. I think it's cool that your doctor diagnosed you and immediately wanted to start on Metformin, rather than just hand you a 10-day Provera. Was it a gynecologist or endocrinologist who prescribed it? (I had bad side effects on Metformin but we're gonna look into other drugs when I go back to the endocrinologist in a few weeks.)

Oh yeah... I also heard that Metformin can take a little while before you get used to it. When I tried it, I started getting those familiar cramps after about a week... I was so excited! If you were just diagnosed, you must not have been on it for long. I bet you'll get it within the next few weeks!! :) "

" I'm actually waiting to start the Metformin until next week. My doctor told me about the side effects and I'm going to New Orleans this weekend and don't want the nausea, vomitting, and diarrhea to accompany to me. It was my family doctor that diagnosed me and prescribed the Metformin. It was actually diagnosed from my blood work that I had done because the tip of my pointer finger has been numb. My insulin is VERY high, and she knew about my missing periods and other symptoms. I have just about every symptom of PCOS that I can find online.

I'm hoping the Metformin will get my period going again! I'd like to have kids in the next year or so, but it doesn't look like that's going to be an immediate option.
Doc said that I might need to go back onto birth control for awhile to get my cycles back under control.

There is just so much going on with this PCOS! It's nice to finally understand all of the weird things that have been going on with me, but it's a lot to take in at once. "

" Those side effects aren't tooooooo common, but yeah, I see your point. :) It'd be much better to enjoy your trip and start things up when you get back. Who the heck wants to be sick on a fun trip like that (especially diarrhea, lol)!? "

" this may sound crazy and might be a slight overshare, but i've noticed after i have really intense intercourse i always get my period. i don't know if it's cause i'm shaking things up down there or what, but the end result means more periods for me and better orgasms for the boyfriend. has anyone else experienced the intercourse causes periods scenario? " I haven't had a period since February. I used to have insanely long periods and now, nothing. I can't go to the doctor right now because I dont have health insurance. It's pretty common for women with PCOS to have very weird cycles. Besides, were all different! Let us know if you find something that works! Believe it or not, I kinda miss my period. :{ "
