I have Spina Bifida which at birth caused me to have an open wound in my lower back. At this age obviously it was stitched up and corrected to a certain extent but now that I am older, I want to look into it again.
It is quite a large scar which spans approximately 15cms x 20cms at my lower back. It wouldn't be an easy job and I suppose I just wonder whether anyone has had any experience of having large scars or wounds treated with plastic surgery and how they went about finding the right person for the job. Obviously most plastic surgeons are into the whole cosmetic side of things with breast augmentations and nose jobs etc so I need to find out what sort of surgeon I'd need to contact for this. If ANYONE can help, please do! Posted on 07/26/09, 01:07 pm |

A doctor who works in reconstructive surgery might be able to help. I'd probably check with a plastic surgeon first and if they can't help you, they can probably put you in touch with a surgeon who can. I know it's not the same, but a friend of mine uses Mederma on her acne scars and it really works for her. That might be something to try before going through the pain and expense of surgery.

I agree that a reconstructive surgeon is the way to go. Also don't rule out plastic surgeons because many of them do reconstructive work.
I have a 2 inch scar dead center on my chest from a childhood reconstructive surgery for pectus excavatum. The scar is far less bothersome than the caved in sternum I had beforehand but sometimes it annoys me. I asked my cosmetic surgeon about it and his philosophy was that a scar is a scar and while it can be reduced to less it will always be there. A scar of your size is probably more worth reduction than the one I have. I also presume there are laser treatments out there. I've know people who've gotten tattoos to cover up scars also, if you're ever up for something that extreme!
