My dog is 13 year old greyhound. He is ex racer and has arthritis in his back and possibly other conditions.
He struggles to get up from lying and is very slow on walks now. I have tried everything including massage, accupuncture and now he sees a top vet. He takes 12 tablets per day for pain. However he is still eating well and still plays with his toys occassionally. The tablets seem to work a bit but i know sometimes he struggles particularly when he has been a walk. How do you know when to let them go? Sometimes i think that yes i will get him put to sleep when he looks uncomfortable but the next minute he got up and went looking for a bone he had hidden and brought it through to his bed. I could see that he still has the spark there. I want to do what is best for him and not be selfish. what do you think? Posted on 05/12/12, 04:42 am |

My best advice was when the bad days begin to outnumber the good days, it is time. It is from the Old Dog Haven rescue. I had exactly the same scenario. They really struggle to stay with us, to be there for us.
I knew after many consequtive seizures and her absolute confusion at times that it was her time. I was horrified that on that day she got up from her sick bed and ate a piece of food. However I went through with it because the nights were completly unbearable for both of us. Total confusion, constant pacing around, turning around and around. Absolutely no communication even with lights left on. Good luck to you. My advice is to talk to her all the way to th vet, hold her close to your heart, and say a prayer over her as she goes to sleep.

Thanks for your support. He is holding on. Last week he went off his food and i was really worried as this is his love in life!
However this week he has started eating again. I have cut his beloved walks down as they just make him sore and use the time to give him attention i.e brushing him etc. I have spoken to my vet and he has reassured me that he will tell me if he thinks that he has had enough. I love him so much, i know to some people it must sound crazy, but he is my best friend, to part with him is so painful i dont think i can take it.
