I have someone very close to me with borderline personality disorder. I have a question but I dont know if this is the right forum for loved ones
I apoligize if it isnt He is very ill and presently hospitalized. Unfortunately he cant seem to grasp the diagnosis. This has effected every relationship in his life. I have been trying to give him info and encourage him to talk to his therapist/doctor but I dont think he is able to grasp the diagnosis on an emotional level I am the only person in his life and I care dearly for him. Unfortunately I dont know that it will sustain the anger. I do realize the illness so I let alot go. His life is full of so much pain. Can anyone tell me how they came to understand and accept their diagnosis in order to seek help I do not believe this is intentional at all on his part. He simply dosent get it Thankyou for any help you can give me. I would love to see a dear man lead a full life with friends and loved ones. Right now there are none other than myself Bless you Posted on 11/06/09, 09:11 pm |

According to Dr. Jeffery Young, Phd, the author of Schema Therapy: A Practitioners Manual, the person with Borderline Personality Disorder have the following "modes' of operation in their life:
1. A Hurt and Vulnerable Child - the authentic self 2. A Punishing Parent - the voices of the past that shamed him 3. A Detached Protector - that is designed to protect the vulnerable child; and yet, does not allow the child to express pain or receive help 4. A Healthy Adult - that needs to be developed further. It's the shameless abuse, cast upon him from an early age, that sets him into emotional dyregulation. At the core...find the anger and shame and deal with it.

Thank you so much Tiger
I so often am aware of this detached person. The anger and shame are huge due to every imaginable abuse one could inflict on a child. I appreciate your help and words of wisdom

It took me about 7 years to understand what it was and how it affected me. I can now see that since i was 17 BPD has basically run and ruined my life.
It's not easy to understand and i know for the family's it is very frustrating. I know i've put mine through a lot. Just be there for him, it might take him a long time before he is willing to deal with it.

It took me 7yrs. When I was first diagnosed I thought this isn't me at all! So I quite seeing her. I have recently gone through some changes and I have begun to notice a pattern in my life and I realized I was wrong. I'am just now getting therapy and trying very hard to understand how to change my behaviour.
