Pleasure delayers- anyone?

I've wondered about this for a while now; seeing as how dopamine is part of our "pleasure" control panel and out dopamine is in short supply.....do you find that you're a pleasure delayer? By that, I mean, do you save the best bite of dessert for last? Do you do all of your chores first and THEN do the fun things? Do you hold off on orgasms until the last possible second? I do all of these things and more, I'm sure.
It makes me "appear" quite reserved and responsible and I've always thought of myself in that way...but.....what if? What if, it has nothing to do with "who" am I, but, rather more to do with "what" I am? What if its, more the fact that I have Parkinson's? What if it's really more small amount of dopamine that MAKES me hold off on the pleasure, because I know that it will be very short lived and I want to savor it. Anyone else think that I might be on to something? Or even think that I'm off my rocker? LOL. Just curious, is all. Posted on 06/13/09, 10:06 am |

I have read that just like there is a "cancer" personality and an "arthritis" personality, etc., there is a "PD personality" that makes you more prone to come down with one particular illness as opposed to another. Supposedly, the PD personality is very "responsible," iron-willed and no-nonsense, deferral of gratification to a T, bordering (for some) on a martyr syndrome. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, and I'll bet there are lots of folks here for whom that is NOT true, but also very Interesting that you should choose some of these same words in your description.

I first read the term "PD personality" a few years ago and believe that, for some people with PD, it may be true. My mother fits the description.
Others who do not fit the description may have acquired PD via other means, such as genetic predisposition, head/neck injury, pesticides/insectides, etc. While I haven't researched the matter of a "PD personality" very much (yet), it's quite possible, in my humble opinion, that there may be something to the theory. After all, if one's personality leads to an insufficient production of dopamine over a course of one's life, is it so far-fetched to later on develope Parkinson's Disease?

I have never heard of pd personality, but when reading it I seem to rather fit the profile of being very responsible, iron willed, defintantely have deferral of gratiffication...
I dont think i conciously hold back from pleasure. I think i am very cynical of it tho. Your not off your rocker. think that pd comes from stress, we have all held onto , and have not been able to release Gosh, my life has been so alone, and stressful, no support ever from anyone, at any stage of my life. I think that is why my pd started to much stress for one person to handle

I found the book that mentions the "Parkinson's Personality": "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Parkinson's Disease - A Holistic Program For Optimal Wellness" by Kill Marjama-Lyons, M.D. and Mary J. Shomon.
Peachybum, I feel your pain come through your last entry here and am sorry that you feel so alone and unsupported. Many of us here have either a religious and/or spiritual belief system that provides us with comfort and strength, energy and joy. A number of people have actually shown you support in this PD forum by sharing their beliefs with you, hoping that you might benefit from what has helped them during their times of difficult. Perhaps organized religion is not your cup of tea, but perhaps there is nonetheless a spiritual path with which you may feel comfortable. That being said, know that there are people at this site who, by sharing their faith with you have tried to help you and support you. While on-line support is not the same as "in-person" support, it is still support...and you are not alone. That being said, have you thought about joining or starting a PD support group where you live? Coming together in person with others who understand what you are going through with respect to your illness may also lead to compassionate, uplifting new friendships. I hope this helps a bit...
