I am 43 and two months ago I was told I had PD. My doctor is wonderful and has figured out my medications so I have finally gone back to work. I was wondering if others are using herbal supplements to boost their systems and if so, what do others take? Have you noticed a difference?

I take the following to pevent symptom progression:
Low-dose nalrexone (4.5 mg/day) (prescription) Dynacirc (10 mg.day) (prescription) Curcumin (2 x 665 mg twice a day) Rosemary (2 x 800 mg twice a day) N-acetyl cysteinne (NAC) (600 mg twice a day) Silymarin (1 x 300 mg twice a day) Citicoline (2 x 250 mg twice a day) Vitamin D3 (4 x 2000 IU twice a day) None of the above were suggested by my doctor. I found them by searching on the Internet and convinced him to write the two necessary prescriptions. I was diagnosed in Jan 08 and have had no symptom progression in the 15 months since. Good luck!

Interesting, what does a high blood pressure med (Dynacirc) add to the mix? The Naltrexone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naltrexone) is interesting.

Tom,
I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, and LDN has really helped me. My dad has Parkinson's and has been on LDN for a short while. Can you tell me more about your experience with it so I can share it with my dad? Thanks!! Here's an article about Coenzyme Q10 which I think is really important to read for people with ALS and Parkinson's. : http://biomediclabs.com/parkinson_... Although I know it is a small study and fairly new, I also think Parkinson's and ALS in particular are so progressive, it's just not worth waiting years and years for things to be tested. I think following this advice on Coenzyme Q10 is (probably) a good idea. -sk

Canuk,
LDN and Naltrexone are like two different drugs, even though LDN is made from Naltrexone. You can really learn about LDN from: www.lowdosenaltrexone.org AND you can find real people on this drug, including myself on a sub group of Daily strength. Here's the link: http://www.dailystrength.org/group... Tom, you should joint this group and share your experience. Thanks!! -SK

Personally I think all this herbal stuff is a load of bullony and just a money making racket for the herbal manufacturers....I think the odd Multi-vitamin here & there won't do you much harm..it's just that I don't trust the herbal stuff.

I'll give you an example why I don't believe i herbal supplements etc...It was just before being diagnosed or very early after diagnosis that was pestered by a family member who was into herbal supplements in a big way as she doesn't believe in taking over the counter meds for anything.
The stuff she said I should take to calm my shakes was Mag Phos & Zinc Phos,& Cali Phos all were very small white tablets quite like sweeteners, and she advised me to take 4 of each every half hour. You put them under your tongue and they disolve instantly. As the days past, nothing changed much & I had already had an appointment booked with a top Neuro and that involved him taking lots of blood samples off me as I had told him that I'd not been feeling too good. The results for the blood tests were back in a hr or two. The Neuro called me in and he told me that there was an unbelievably high ammount of mangernese in my blood...& he couldn't work out how it could have got there...I sheepishly told him about the Mag Phos,Zinc Phos & Cali Phos.....His reaction stunned me..he went ballistic,furious...he said never, never take any meds other than the ones you're prescibed...& added if you had not come here today and carried on taking those Phos's it could have been very, very dangerous. So needless to say that is why I have no faith in the herbal stuff. Yours Truly Dirk !!;o))

Dirk,
I totally get why you don't believe in supplements, but for me I experienced something very different. As well, you really need to look up Low Dose Naltrexone, especially on Youtube. For people who have MS, this is truly a miracle drug. It's not a "supplement" so keep in mind, it deserves to be in the "drug" category, since you do believe in drugs. But, it's a drug that as far as people can tell, has extraordinary benefits that are unlike most other drugs. I use this for my RA and have found that it works really well. Eventually I went on a supplement called "Neprinol." This is no ordinary supplement. These are enzymes that reduce the fibrin in your body. For you, it would do nothing except lower cholesterol. For me however, I have Rheumatoid arthritis and it has done wonders for me. It took some time to kick in, and I kept hoping it would work because of the one online case study of a person with RA who took this. It shows all of her blood levels, CRP, ESR, etc., things that are important to ME at the beginning, before Neprinol, then at 2 months, 4 months and 6 months. Anyway, after two months I did feel a difference and at 4 months things really started to change for me. Your medicine protocal is different that mine. Coenzyme Q10 however is one of those supplements that even your doctor should be prescribing because most neurologists do agree that CoQ10 does help with Parkinson's. The article that shows a larger amount of CoQ10 is even more beneficial is granted from a small study and still being researched, but I think it is worth looking at, especially if you are in the state of mind that you enjoy researching and feel ok with experimenting. My normal drug regimen would include chemotherapy drugs. I used to take them along with steroids. This is not a fun way to deal with RA. Eventually I tried the method I am on now and feel WAY better. I have more flexibility, less inflammation and a better piece of mind that I'm not going to die of cancer due to long term use of chemotherapy drugs. As well, I don't have the constant reminder that I am sick due to nausea and hair loss. Perhaps there isn't enough research done to know for sure what will happen to me 10 years from now, but I believe in how I feel and I can tell you that I honestly feel healthy now that I'm taking the supplement and LDN. Before I felt like a very VERY sick person. Best of luck to you, -Sarah
