Should I keep working?

About a month ago I applied and was approved for short-term disability. At the time I was working long hours in a very demanding and stressful environment. I was so fatigued (physically and mentally) mid-way through the day that I was no longer able to give people at workthe leadership they needed or my family the husband and dad they deserve.
After being off for several weeks now I am able to get the rest my body needs to battle this thing and am also finding time to exercise and do voice therapy. I am feeling much better and feel like I am more of the dad and husband I once was. My struggle is this... the better I feel, the more I feel I should return to work. However, my wife has seen what the stress of work does to me and is concerned it would put me right back where I started. This is a constant mental battle I can not resolve. Any advice would be a huge help. Posted on 02/18/09, 01:02 am |

i also work in a high stress demanding job, and when in this environment my pd acts up ,
i have been forced to take some time off, due to a foot operation, and in that time at home, well my pd is much lesser that usual, my medication even stretches out longer I am much less stressed when not working and honsestly if i could think of a career that was less stressful, a career that gave me the same amount of money im used to. Well i would pursue that line. Can you retrain your self in something. Honestly i dont want to give up work as l cant afford it, and l love working, so if i could think if a less stressful job i would persue that

You do not say how old you are, but quiting work must be hard for you. If you can't do that particular job which is causing stress and fatigue, maybe you can find something that would be easier for you. My husband was diagnosed with PD 1 1/2 years ago at age 59. Fortunately he retired from a government job when he was only 52, then trucked a part time job. He gave that up before he realized he had PD, but I think the fatigue was the start of things. own speed as he tires easily. He is also bothered by mental things, for example, talking on the phone to the bank, or some other business.
Is it possible to work out of your home, or go into some kind of business of your own that wouldn't be a demanding? I hope you work things out.

I was almost in similar situation last October. There were lots of lay offs at work and I was stressed about looking for a new position within my company. I new I would find a job, but nevertheless it is an additional stress. And what if this job does not last, more stress.. At that point my MD advised me to apply for disability. I was shocked, the thought never crossed my mind before. After discussing with my husband, I applied for a short term and was very surprised how quickly I got it. I never went back to work.
With PD there are diff stages/symptoms we going through: depression, sleepless nights, etc. It requires effort and energy to deal with that you may not have after working all day. Plus, consider your insurance situation. If you work and covered, when you apply for disability - you are covered by your work until 65. What happen if you loose your job? Hope this is not possibility, but we are in recession. Will you have coverage you and your family need? Our meds are very expensive. What can I say... I am on disability since October, still waiting for SSD. But.... I do think it was good for me. I developed new hobbies and trying to keep myself busy. The best of luck to you. It is a very difficult decision ann..

I also had the same work situation and am now retired on long term disability. You didn't mention your age, but removing the stress and getting rest was the best thing I ever did (not to mention how much better it is for my wife and boys). If I can be of any help, feel free to send me a message.
Have a great day

Hi, I always found that a stressfull workplace or situation will axacerbate the symptoms of PD, when I was first diagnosed the nurse told me that wherever possible avoid stress.
The first thing I remember worrying about was my job as a truck driver, but my boss came to see me in hospital and reassured me my job was safe and he told me that if I couldn't drive the truck, there would be another job in the factory. Take care buddy !!;O))

I'm 47 and last fall my employer was noticing that I was slowing down at work and seemed tired to him. He said he was going to send me home when he noticed me dragging. Had already been diagnosed with PD two years earlier. Went to my neuro in Oct. and he put me on disability until we could get things straightened out. Went to a movement disorder clinic where I was diagnosed with Parkinsons Plus (CBGD). Luckily I had a disability insurance policy for long and short term disability. I have been on disability since Oct... I applied for ssd in Dec and was approved in Feb so now I'm drawing ssd and long term insurance. It is nice that I no longer have to deal with the stress of my job but wish I felt better . I recommend getting on disability as soon as you can. With PD you're going to become totally disabled, just a fact we can't ignore, so the sooner you can get on disability the more quality time you can spend with your family and friends.

I have a very busy job and it is stressful at times.
My boss is aware of my health, but they keep giving me more responsibilities. It must be my bright sunny, shining face.:)I have a good attitude about things and want to keep working. My doctor says to keep moving. I definitely move a lot at work. If things get too stressful, I am going to try to quit, as the stress is really bad for my PD.
