If you're like me, you probably wonder what exactly do they do in Lee Silverman Voice Training. Here's what I did:
Hold "ah" on a pitch in the middle of you voice for as long as possible at 80 dB (repeat 10 times). To loosen the vocal cords, try to relax your body, especially the shoulders and say "whoa." Sometimes, it was a long "whoa", sometimes it was short. Repeat as necessary. When you do the whoas and ahs, try to open the mouth as much as possible. The act of lowering one's jaw relaxes the throat muscles and improves the voice. Repeat the above two steps until your voice quality is normal. Start on middle pitch as before with "ah". Glide up to highest note and hold as long as you can. (repeat 10 times). When you glide, be certain it's not just a simple note change (2 notes). To ensure it's a glide, make your voice change a minimum of a 3-notes. Start on middle pitch as before with "ah". Glide down to lowest note and hold as long as you can. (repeat 10 times). Hope this demystifies the process of LSVT. For homework, twice a day I'm suppose to do the same as above and then say 10 short phrases that I commonly say (e.g.,"Alex, come here," "Hello, this is Laura.") at 80 dB. Of course, I need to repeat the phrases 10 times. BTW, dB meters are available at Radio Shack. |
