Medication versus herbal remedy

My 7 year old son has ADHD and was diagnosed when he was 3. At the age of 4 he started taking medication up until last year. He was taking Rhisperdal and Clonidine. He started having some really weird twitching and movement in his right arm. I also noticed that he just didn't have much of his personality that I knew so well. After doing some research on the side effects of the meds, I was horrified!!! So I decided to wean him off the meds and try the herbal way. I am still working on finding the best vitamins and the best diet for him. But the school is trying to push me to put him back on medication. I really don't want to but he is not doing good in school at all. I get calls from his teacher weekly and I go to confrence meetings every other week. Some have the teachers have nice things to say about him but it is mostly negative. I feel backed into a corner because on one hand, I don't want him to suffer from side effects but on the other hand, I don't want to deprive him of an education. I ordered this book called "3 Steps to Conquering ADD/ADHD" and I find it very interesting. So if anyone has any advice I would love to hear it!!! I really don't know what to do at this point and time! I am stuck!!!! Please help!!! Thanks and I hope everyone is having a good night!

" My oldest Son, who is 9, has ADHD (offically diagnosed at the beginning of 09) and we have not placed him on medication. It is very challenging and has been difficult. But we don't want to change his personality. He is a very bright and bubbly child with lots of love. We pulled him out of school and my wife started home schooling him at the start of this school year. We have three other younger children as well, with the second child at a private school in Kindergarden. The two little ones are home.

It has placed some big challanges on my wife to teach my 9 yr old, but has added some great advantages to our relationship with our son. I get to teach him the science / physics portion of his classwork and its done on the weekends. The greatest thing about home schooling is that you can work with your child's "good time", and not at the "struggle time". It is more work for the parents.

We have also found that sleep is a big effector as well as stimulus in the house. We have tried to remove any clutter in the boys room and keep the room as "plain" and organized as possible. A consistent daily scheduling of events has also helped. I believe that its all of the little changes that finally add up helping out overall.

Cheers.
Tom. "

" When we started our son on meds 2 years ago it was the hardest thing we had to do; especially for my husband. We started with Chiropractic, gluten-free diet, fish oil, Astronaut training, Sensory integration dysfunction therapy, etc. Some of these may have helped but he still needed meds. It has been hard to see some of the meds make him seem subdued. Our best luck has been with Focalin XR. He still had his funny, witty personality, good appetite, but less impulsive. The only problem with him is finding something that lasts long enough through the day. He is very thin and seems to require a high dose and then needs to switch to a different med because it seems to lose it's effectiveness. It's not easy. I wish you the best!!:) "
