Financial Whoes for Medications

This is only a portion of my problems but I was wondering if there are any Single parents with children with ADHD who can't seem to get a grip on the FINANCIAL BURDEN of the doctor visits, medications, etc. I feel so alone and no matter what, I find myself in the same HOLE. I have a good paying job and health insurance BUT my deductible is $3000 and I have to pay EVERYTHING out of pocket until that is met. The medication prices are RIDICULOUS and unfortunately I don't meet any of the guidelines for the assistance programs!! The doctors have tried the generics and cheaper brands but the medications just don't seem to work for my daughter and I end up getting the more expensive ones. I am sitting on a RX right now that is $185 and wondering how to get it filled. The light bill is due and we need groceries but I am crying because I can't do all of the above. I am sooooooo angry that her DEAD BEAT sperm donor won't help but I am the one that the teachers call when there are problems at school and I am the one physically, mentally and financially DRAINED. Anybody?? Help??

" I have insurance with a lower deductible but the financial burden is still felt which makes the day-to-day coping, stress and emotional rollercoaster seem even more out of hand. I hope you are able to find some type of assistance that you do qualify for. Maybe your pediatrician can recommend some organizations that might be able to assist. My prayers are with you. I am not a single parent but know how toling it can all be on your soul coping with a special child. "

" Thank you for listening and praying for me. I am truly frustrated through and through. I feel like such a bad parent when I have to keep nagging or trying to keep her attention. Even with her meds, it seems like a constant, relentless battle everyday. Now the doctors think something else is going on with her (no diagnosis yet) and I can only pray that the medicine for whatever that diagnosis may be is not expensive. I have even put my own health issues aside and have not taken my meds in over a year. I have moderate COPD and Asthma; believe me, I would love to have my Inhalers but they are expensive too and she comes first. Again, thank you and I hope you have found some peace with your child as well. "

" I'm married but we have no health insurance, so, I am right there with you! My god, I have never heard of a $3000 deductible--I used to gripe because when we had insurance ours was $700 per family member. At $3000, I'd think that feels like not even having any insurance--you are always having to pay yourself! "

" You are pretty much hitting the nail on the head. "it feels like having no insurance". After paying about $300 premium a month and then all the doctor bills & medications because of having to meet that deductible, I am completely BROKE. I did get lucky this past prescription and he only cost me $33 so 'THANK YOU GOD' but then last Thursday night but stupid car broke down on my way home from work. The repair cost: $2000 minimum. Okay so where does this stess end......???? Already struggling with medical bills, barely making ends meet check to check and now CAR REPAIRS? OMG. How in the world am I supposed to get to work? Thank God for my parents and extended family. My boyfriend's brother is looking into buying me a car from auction and me making payments to him. At first, I am feeling like a real BUM because I have never had to depend on others financially but now, WHAT CHOICE DO I HAVE. I am so glad to have found this website and thank you so much for listening and replying to my cries. "

" To antire1214, have you look into getting her on SSI? Basically, since ADHD is considered a disability in the eyes of the government, I went to the Social Security office and signed Luke up on Supplimental Secruity Income I think that is what it stands for. But there are 2 different ones you can look into. It goes by your income and it is some work and some waiting as well but if she is eligable to recieve it, you will get a monthly check to use toward medications, child care, etc. It is worth looking into and there is no harm in trying. Just go on to http://www.ssa.gov/disability/ you may find some interesting things on there. Or you can go onto your local county website and check there. The check Luke receives is not much but it helps out. Keep your chin up,everything will work out! "

" Thank u, Jodi. I have looked into the SSI briefly but when they said they would use my income, I gave up. Most people (especially the government) think that I make too much to get any assistance and that JUST PLAIN SUCKS. They don't consider the economy, mortgage payments, food bill, etc and that I am a single mom who gets no help from the piece of **** dad. I am saying that nicely as I can. Heck, the State of Florida won't even crack down on him for not paying!!!! So much for them passing the 'Dead Beat' law. That was a JOKE. My daughter is 10 and soon 11, the man has been ordered to pay $300 a month and has managed to pay 6 months of her life. Sad isnt it. Thanks for your advice and I will look into the SSI again and just accept what they say; they can only say NO, right? God Bless, friend. "

" I just cant imagine how much extra stress having to pay for medication and healthcare would cause. In the UK, our healthcare is paid for so I am very very lucky in that way. We also have something called Disability Living Allowance which I think may be the same thing as SSI. I didnt like to apply for anything, felt a bit too proud, but now I dont care, I take everything my son is entitled to. Any little bit helps. I really wish I could offer more in the way of something to help but I just wanted to give you a hug really. "

" My heart goes out to you. I was in sort of the same situation. By all means go look into SSI for your daughter. My daughter gets a small SSI check now for her meds. I know all about dead beat dads. Hers pays every once in a blue moon! He only has to pay 100.00 every 2 weeks and he is a liscensed massage therapist and owns his own buisness, go figure ! He even tried to get custody saying that I only wanted her on meds so I didn't have to deal with her and she really didn't need them. He is the nut case! Please don't give up. You can do this. "
