Fish oil and ADHD

I know this question has come up before and so I decided to do some heavy research and talk to my new dr about it. I took my son off of Vyvanse because it made his tics worse. So bad that he was starting to slur and and walk around like he was drunk. He couldn't stand in one spot and not like a hyper child and being bouncy, I mean he would literally fall. So, I weaned him off myself and don't plan to put him on another stimulant. Anyway, to the point. I researched the different brands of fish oil, and thought why not try it? It won't hurt him because 95% of the western world has a dha/epa deficiancy which is found in cold water fish. Most children with adhd have been found to have a significantly lower level of dha and epa than the average child. I chose to buy the Carlson brand of fish oil, it is a bit more expensive. $12 for 50 pills however if you compare brands you will see it has a much higher dosage than store brands and have a much less chance of "fish burps." Now, it may not work for everyone but I was willing to try to keep my son off of pres. meds. However he has been on it for about 4 weeks now and the difference is astounding. He doesn't have the meltdowns he used to and is doing better in school. He doesn't have the sleep issues that many stimulants can cause. Keep in mind that the pills are pretty large so if you decide to try this and you have smaller children they do make a liquid that is also flavored. My sister takes that and she said it isn't bad at all, plus you can mix it with juice. I hope this helps anyone that reads this.

How old is your son and what's the dosage you're giving him?

My son is 11 and I give him one pill a day and the dosage is 300mg EPA/ 200 DHA. My dr. says their isn't really a wrong dose, it can't hurt anyone but there are other brands out there with a lesser amount of epa/dha if you have a smaller child and would feel more comfortable giving them that. Good luck.

I have had my son on chewable ones, he is 5, for awhile now. I haven't noticed a difference but he never had meltdowns or anything. He's been on Vyvanse for a bit now he takes the lowest dose possible, but I have noticed a positive difference with vyvanse. I'm new at all this and it's the first medication we've tried. He is still on the fish oil because it's good for him. I hope to see a continue climb in a positive direction. It's so stressful and hard to know the right thing when you have so many people and doctor's telling you a hundred different things.

I hear you azmama, everyone including drs. seem to have their own opinions and solutions and sometimes the are so contradictory. I figured I would try the fish oil because like you said, either way it is good for him. I am glad the vyvanse worked for your son. I am not against the drug it just happened to be the one that didn't work for my son. It is hard to listen to others sometimes because they all have their ideas, even if they are crazy but I suppose we just have to take it with a grain of salt and store the info away. haha. Good luck to you and your little boy.

Thanks!! I can use all the help we can get. I know what you mean about hearing so many things at once. I was at a point I was willing to do ANYTHING and just prayed it would work. We were trying everything except medications, but ended up breaking down and tried medication. So far it's been a good experience. Keep your fingers crossed, everyday is anadventure.

I wish you luck harrysmum. While it may not work on everyone, think of it this way. If by chance it doesn't work, it isn't hurting him by trying it, frankly everyone could use that little boost sometimes. If you want to do your own research all you have to do is type in "fish oil and adhd" in the search and you will come up with many sites all positive, but here are a few I looked at.
