New to Group - Question

First I am new to this group and I am so happy to have found it. We just found out yesterday that our 7 year old son has ADHD. Not really surprised. None of my friends have children with ADHD so I'm hoping to find support and understanding here.

So my first question is, how long will it take for me to see any results with his medicine? I'm at work now and can't remember which one it is. The doctor said we can change or adjust at anytime, but I just wondered how long it would take to know if it is working?

Thanks in advance,
Peggy

" Hi Peggy and welcome!

To answer your question, my son was on Ritalin and we saw a difference on the first pill. It was a matter of hours, not days. But everyone does not have that experience!

God Bless and wishing you all the best! "

" My 6 year old grandchild who lives with me has recently been diagnosed also and started on Vyvanse. I noticed a change in about 3 days. It has been a week now and the change is shocking. I can't believe that the first drug tried has worked. I am scared to be so hopeful. Also she has had no side effects yet. From reading other posts I certainly realize that this doesn't happen all the time. I hope this drug continues to work for her, she even sees a difference. I hope your child will find something that works for him. Let us know how it goes. "

" I'm new here too. My son was diagnosed with ADHD on thursday. He has been on Vyvanse since then and we are noticing a positive change with no side effects. I hope it ends up being that easy with the first medication being a ringer, but I'm cautiously optimistic. My son is 5 and we have never dealt with anything like this before. I'm in the same boat...totally lost and don't know what to expect. "

" Hello again azmama. When my son was on vyvanse it worked really well for the first 2 weeks that is when we started noticing the tics, however, he had a small one before that we didn't realized was a tic. He used to squint his eyes and nose, I thought it was his way of pushing up his glasses, but it was the tic, and many stimulants can exasperate a tic. Otherwise, it worked great for him except the sleeplessness. That was more difficult. Also his appetite decreased so much that he lost 10 lbs in a week and a half. So watch his eating habits closely. I hope the vyvanse keeps working and you won't have to change. "

" My son has never had any kind of tics or anything like that but I will keep a look out for those. They told me to watch his appetite but so far he still eats like a pig lol. His sleep hasn't been disturbed at all he's still taking naps and going to bed at 8:30 and sleeping all night. He's on a VERY low dose. I wonder if that makes a difference. He's also much bigger then the average 5 year old. He is 4 feet tall and 53lbs. I have noticed it wears off in the mid/later part of the afternoon. I'm going to give it a few weeks before talking to the doctor about a dosage increase. Other then that....so far so good. I hope it continues. "

" Hi! I'm new too! My son was diagnosed in Feb, but was not suprise to us. Although we were leary of the medication, started him on it, Vyvanse, right away and saw a difference with the first dose. So far he's been doing well on the meds with no side effects. Will be thinking of and praying for you. Hang in there! "

" We saw immediate improvement but it does vary depending on the medication and the child.

" Thank you all for your replies. Zachary has been on his medication for 3 weeks now and he seems to be doing much better in school. Of course I'm not 100% sure since his teacher won't reply to my emails, but I take that as no news is good news:) He had a little issue in the beginning with some emotional outbursts at home that we'd never seen before, but thankfully that did not last! Homework is easier also, not the struggle that is use to be. And he finally had the patience to learn how to ride his 2 wheel bike. He's very proud of himself:)

Thanks again,
Peggy "

" I have been reading the posts on this site and I finally decided to join. My 9yr old was diagnosed with ADHD about 3 years ago. we have went thru several different meds, currently he is on aderol. I can't really say that any of them have worked because we are still having issues. In school, he is academically ahead of his class, now on the behavior part whoo big problems. I am going out of my mind. I seriously just wish my kid was normal. Is that wrong???? "
