Question on meds

Since I have been away from the ADHD thing for quite a few years and am now headed back into it with my grandson, I have a question.

What medications did your doctor start your child out with for ADHD? How did he test or determine that your child had ADHD?

I guess that's two questions....lol.

Thanks ahead of time to all who take the time to respond!

" Forgot the testing part. I was having her tested by a doctor of Psychology because of low IQ scores on previous tests that I did not agree with. Anyway she found normal IQ but classic ADHD so she did another test to confirm it. Anyhow things started to make sense so now we have meds and counseling along with hope for a brighter future. "

" my daughter is 4 and we started ritalin LA, 10mg just 4 weeks ago.
the way she was diagnosed was through her neurologist's and my observations since she's been born. and through her ped, we gave a list of questions to her pre school teacher to observe & fill out.

we could tell an immediate change in her behavior on the 2nd day after taking the med. sooo amazing!! even my dd says, mommy, this medicine makes me feel better!! "

" My son was diagnosed by a child psychiatrist. Initially the school did the cognitive/social/emotional testing but misdiagnosed him with depression. A year later we had him assessed by a Mood & Anxiety Disorder clinic (b/c of depression issues) and after reading all the testing the school did the psychiatrist, psychologist and social worker dx him with ADHD. Said the depression was secondary to the ADHD from not being treated for so many years.

My son is on Concerta and I don’t feel it’s working at all!! He’s been on it off an on since June – had his dosage increased about 6 weeks ago and I still see no difference.

I’m going to have my son referred by our GP to a pediatrician who specializes in ADHD – I think this is the best course of action I can take. Plus I think I’ll ask about Vyvanse… since his school now thinks he has ODD. "

" My doctor started my son off on Vyvanse and it's only been 3 days but we notice a lot of positive improvement with no side effects, so far. He went through hours of testing to even get the diagnosis. He has emotional, physical, and intelligence testing and counseling from the melmed center out here in Arizona. I am hopeful for the first time, but still leary and trying to figure all this out. He is only 5 and our journey has just begun, but so far so good. "

" I wanted to add that he reminds me to take his medication because he says he feels better and more not so "crazy" when he takes it. I like it because he is still the happy go lucky kid. It doesn't make him like a zombie or change who he is. All of his testing came back that he has the IQ of a 7 year old and is bored in class and that's adding to the restless behavior. We looked into a Montessori school because it would be more his pace, plus I'm not crazy about his school or the teachers so far. They have made this experience very stressful, and guilt filled, and worse of all hopeless. I'm feeling better with the right dr supports in place now with professionals who specialize in this. They see my son for who he is and involve and listen to him and me. We are feeling pretty good about things. "
