Personal Tips?

So, with my daughter being so young, we really don't want to medicate unless we absolutely have to.
Does anyone have any tips to manage this illness without meds? I got a few off the internet last night, but I also want tried and true ones that have either worked for you all or haven't worked. Thanks! Posted on 05/24/09, 10:05 pm |

great reply tjmv! My doctor put it into perspective for me like that as well, said almost the exact same thing (maybe they went to the same school? lol) Anyway, that is the way I look at it as well ; we went a year after diagnosis to put him on meds. I had a tough time making the decision, but now I couldn't imagine his life without them right now. While as parents, we fear the unknown about medicating our kids, meanwhile they are the ones who are suffering and need us to make that decision for them

there are herbs on the market that can help we did one that was called focus that worked for about a year for my son and caffeen will help but that is a personal decision. here is the link to the focus
http://www.nativeremedies.com/prod... it is worth the cost as it only takes a few drops a day and its compleatly natural most of the herbs that are used have been arround for hundreds of years and used for these issues and a few are grown even in my own yard

I agree totally with tjmv. My doctor also said the same things to me, and that is what ultimately made me look at it so differently. When I thought about all the ways my son was hurting - his grades, his self esteem, his isolation, his attitude about life and himself, his physical well being (due to his high impulsivity), it went on and on... I realized that NOT putting him on meds was more dangerous to him than PUTTING him on.
My doctor also said to me that taking meds for ADHD is no different, really, than someone wearing glasses. So many people wear glasses to help them focus, just as those with ADHD take meds to help them focus. And the ear infection example is perfect, because we all give our kids medication for other physical ailments without even giving it a second thought.

She officially has a diagnosis now, but the doc was against meds since she is so young. So we are kinda floundering right now.

As I've said previously, I'm just a grandma to a child with ADHD and have an adult son who's been ADD all his life, but he didn't get an official DX until he was a senior in high school - they had all sorts of other learning disability DXs, but at the time our school diagnosticians didn't believe a kid could be ADD without the hyperactivity. Duh!!! I could read the professional literature, but they couldn't? Anyway, enough of the looking back.
After going though this without the choice of trying the meds, I would certainly keep an open mind about them. Since your little one is still so young and school isn't an issue at the moment, I would take advantage of the time you have before she begins school to try all the dietary and supplements you can before you're literally forced to make a choice on the meds. The drugs for ADHD are just like any other prescribed drug - some work well, some don't and some cause problems. It just depends on how the individual reacts to a particular drug. Just be careful if you try the supplements since they're not fully regulated in some countries as pharmaceutical drugs are supposed to be. Notice the supposed in there? Yes, I'm a bit of cynic. Another thing to consider is, believe it or not accupuncture. I know an accupuncturist who has treated several children for ADHD, including her own, and she swears it helped them. And, no it is not painful and is in fact quite relaxing. Our vet even used accupuncture to help our daughter's cat after he suffered a severe eye injury that cost him the use of one eye and caused a severe infection. The cat slept through the whole thing and woke up purring!

P.S. I do appreciate reading the comments you other folks have made because it's good info I can share with my son to help his little boy. The most important thing I can do for my grandson is help his dad be better informed in dealing with this. Thanks for being here, all of you.
