Does anyone have any experience with Methylin? The doctor wants us to add this.

Methylin is Ritalin. My son was on it from age 5 to age 14 when he stopped taking it.
It worked miracles for us at a very small dose. I gave it to him during school days and when we had to go somewhere, such as to church or a relative's house. His growth was definitely NOT stunted - he grew to be 6'4". I believe he did not like the "stigma" of taking the medication. He began self-medicating with energy drinks and high caffeing drinks at about 15. They were not the same. He still needs the Ritalin at 23, but still refuses to take it. I saw no side effects of the Ritalin. But, as I said, he was on a low dose of it. But for myself and my family, we have all considered it as being sent to us from God himself. I think the worst thing about Ritalin is that it is overprescribed and often prescribed for the wrong reasons.

Thank you so much. I am going to try it. While I am worried about the effects of meds I am more worried about the more immediate effects of his self esteem. I tell myself everyday that my child will succeed and be happy and healthy and if that means some meds then thats what it is. I am so thankful I found this group!

I think the effects on his personality would increase his self worth and how he feels about himself. My son now 11 is on a different form of Ritalin, CONCERTA WITH A BUMP OF METHLIN WHEN HE NEEDS IT, afterschool or in the morning. he really doesn't use the bump that much. He too is against medicating but he does it for school which he knows he needs. I know it is hard to make the decision to medicate but it can be really helpful in most situations, therapy is also very helpful. when he was younger he did play therapy and it worked wonders. now he is just starting with a new therapist that specializes in middle school age kids. I am hoping it will help. Good luck to you and BIG HUGS!!!!!!
